Do you wash them each time you run them through your bore or, do you run one snake through your bore 5 or 6 times to "clean" your barrel and then wash your snake?

It needs to soak for 5 minutes or so first. I use a .223 brush on the bolt tail with slip and the carbon disolves off quickly. Same with barrels, let it soak a few minutes first.Comment

I'm sorry, but I must point out that it is impossible for a human to wear out a barrel just by using a bore snake. Over time, the bristles will just get polished and bent so that they won't provide any resistance. If you pulled a boresnake through a barrel one million times, the only thing you'd end up with be a perfectly clean barrel with nice sharp rifling....and a useless bore snake. This is literally the same as trying to use your fingernails to claw through mild steel, it's never going to do anything.I don't need a chemist to tell me that ammonia dissolves copper. That includes the copper found in brass and brass brushes.
So, you think that putting a dirty snake through your barrel will get it really clean? You might want to use a borescope sometime and find out just how much dirty they leave behind. Also, think about the extra wear on your rifling from pulling that dirt through your barrel over and over.
Oh, and Op, hoppes 9 and the oil is all I've used over the years. The only time I had to use something else was when I forgot to put gas checks on my 2000fps bullets
I used break free bore cleaning foam

Hoppe's #9 and a good bore/chamber/toothbrush is more than you'll ever need for CLEANING.
But you need to protect after so follow up with oil.

I have some Hoppe's, and some ballistol that I got on sale. Both seem to work pretty well.Comment

Always use anything that has tactical at the end of the name. It works super good I mean like all the mall ninja operators have left good reviews on that stuff. Hopper #9? I don't know her.Comment

A dab of Hoppe's No. 9 behind each ear and a dab on the perineum makes 'em hot and bothered.
Better than any date rape drug and it's OTC legal.Comment

It has nothing to do with the brass bristles. Why is this concept so hard for some to understand? Boresnakes pick up dirt, sand and grit when using them properly. So, after you pull a clean boresnake through your barrel once, it is now impregnated with grit that goes back through the barrel each pass. Do you really think that pulling a piece of cloth, with sand and grit particles embedded in it, doesn't damage the barrel? If so, why not just use this?I'm sorry, but I must point out that it is impossible for a human to wear out a barrel just by using a bore snake. You do realize that the part of a boresnake that picks up sand (are you burying your guns in the desert?) and grit is made of fabric right? Fabric will give way when applied pressure to to the point where objects caught in it won't cause any harm.It has nothing to do with the brass bristles. I think the point he is trying to make is that that once its dirty, its dirty, unlike running a fresh patch down the bore each time.
Probably similar to wiping ur own @$$ with a piece of tissue you literally just wiped with.
Bottom line, as they get dirty, there are more abrasives and other junk on the snake that you just run though the bore over and over.
Bore snakes have their place, but they are not part of my regular cleaning regiment. I do keep them around incase a rifle ever takes a dive into the sand or dirt. Easy way to clean out some particulate which would be a partial bore obstruction.ExtremeXComment

Lol nice analogy, you can also just wash the boresnake [emoji14]I think the point he is trying to make is that that once its dirty, its dirty, unlike running a fresh patch down the bore each time.
