Trooper charged in accidental fatal shooting of another trooper

An update to the story discussed in this thread a few months back:

State police corporal charged with shooting death of State Trooper David Kedra

State police Cpl. Richard Schroeter, 42, of Royersford, is being charged with five counts of recklessly endangering another person that led to the death of 26-year-old state Trooper David Kedra.
Trooper's death may prove hard to prosecute
By all accounts, it was an accident. Cpl. Richard Schroeter had led countless classes in his 12 years as a Pennsylvania State Police firearms instructor. He had taught the same class several times that week, always carefully unloading his weapon and following "the four cardinal rules of firearms safety," according to Montgomery County grand jury testimony.

But on Sept. 30, Schroeter told investigators, he "did not perform a safety check of his Sig Sauer" pistol. When he squeezed the trigger, the five troopers sitting around a conference table "saw a flash, heard a sound, and saw Trooper Kedra jump," the grand jury wrote.
Kedra family objects to lesser charges in state trooper's death

I don’t understand how the DA can say yes, he was reckless in what he did, but let’s ignore the fact that he actually killed somebody,” Kedra’s older brother, Kevin, said Wednesday in a telephone interview.

That's why there is redundancy built into safety rules. Because if you accidentally fire a gun, it should pointed in a safe direction.

Arrogance, and that isn't an attack on cops. Experienced users of many dangerous items get cocky, think that they are above making mistakes, they get sloppy, and things go bad.

This should be a lesson to all of us. FAMILIARITY BREEDS COMPLACENCY.

When you're new to guns, you respect and realize the absolute destruction you hold, at least I hope you did. But as we become more and more familiar and practiced with them, I've seen people lose that respect. Especially because, "well I've done this 10,000 times and nothing bad has ever happened!" That's why it's important to ingrain PROPER safety steps into your weapons manipulation.

^^ This exactly. Safe handling must be practiced so religeously from the very start of firearms training that it becomes an ingrained, automatic process, that no longer requires concious thought. It should just happen every time you touch any firearm. Yeah . . I know . . maybe too idealistic, but this type of accident should never ever happen imo.

I agree 100%! I know I have failed to do the proper check on occasion. This is why threads like this are always welcome. It serves as a reminder to do everything right. The results of NOT doing so can be fatal to you or a loved one.

                  Happy shooting and be safe.

This thread shows both, how important it is to ALWAYS practice proper safety and also that cops will protect their own no matter what happens. Reckless endangerment????? WTF?? How about the much more appropriate charge of MANSLAUGHTER.
