Can I build my own shooting range

If somebody owned their own warehouse in SJ County could they build their own shooting range if it was just for personal use?

There's no state law prohibition. My next step would be to check the zoning to see if that is a permitted use of the property. Even if it is, plan on spending megabucks for the site engineering and permit expenses.

If you were to shoot inside a warehouse, in a populated area, without going through the engineering and permitting processes to establish the safety of that use, you should plan on a trip to jail for violation of PC 246.3.
If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.

Maybe Im missing something. Its legal to shoot guns in the county as long as your 500 ft from a residence and aimed away. Inside a warehouse, with a gun trap and steel plates on the walls and ventilation, how is that mega bucks?

Not in the city but rather in the county. I see nothing in the county code. Its only talks about discharge in public

Don't see anything in the State code. Don't see it in county code. I guess its could be a planning issue although.

LOL!! Making a 'gun trap' is easy and cheap. Getting the gun trap engineered and all the appropriate design drawings and materials documentation required to submit to your zoning/planning department for a permit is hard and expensive. Same goes for 'plates on walls' and ventilation.

Then if you're not already zoned for a gun range, you'll have to work through the legal issues of getting a zoning exception which, if your zoning board isn't gun friendly, might require legal assistance.

Then if you get approved and get a permit, you might be required to have a contractor do the work instead of you.

My guess is that you could probably buy a lifetime membership to a couple of local gun ranges and a lifetime supply of ammo for less than the total cost of building a private indoor range on commercial property.

Of course these are all just guesses based the pita it can be to just get a freakin bathroom added to a house

The worst part is once you comercialize it you have to deal with the EPA.

Environmental assessment for lead and/or powder residue being released into the neighborhood?

Example. Can you fix your own car in your warehouse, sure. Can you fix other people cars, no without a permit. Its public then. Adding steal plate to your walls doesn't require a permit. Adding acoustical tiles to your walls doesn't require a permit. If you already have lights and ventilation, I'm just not sure what you need a permit for.

It's going to come down to zoning - which you likely won't get. And if somehow you do, the associated costs will kill this. It's not and will not be as simple as hooking up a good vent system (blowing lead burnoff into the air) and hanging some steel on the wall hoping you can just throw 10k at the project and be shooting indoors in 2 weeks just because you own the building. Insurance alone, assuming you could get past everything else, yeah that would certainly kook out on wanting to insure you given what is going on in the building.

I'd double check there isn't a blanket prohibition on shooting in the county (outside of officially allowed places). I know you said you checked; but I'd look again.

Pretty sure we have one in OC (for instance).

                            BigSig,

Can you confirm that you meant San Joaquin County by your reference to "SJ county"

If so, there's no such provision in your county code.

Yes it s San Joaquin. The only reg in San Joaquin has to do with shooting firearms in public. Nothing about private. Its .22 or shotguns and ai think 200 yards.
