Rust...

So recently, I opened up my safe, and found that several of my firearms had rusted. Most of it was spotted rust, however, my HD shotgun got the worst of it.

I used some elbow grease, and removed most of it. Unfortunately for my HD shotgun, I removed most of the bluing with it. Its being sent out to cerakote shortly.

After doing some research, I found that white vinegar works great at removing rust. After never wanting to remove rust again, I went back over every spot that had rust with vinegar, and got a bit more off (also noticed some new rusted parts).

Some things I noticed:
-The cheaper parts rusted faster
-The quality parts didn't rust on most things except in mild areas
-Areas that had a lot of contact with hands had way more rust (bolts, triggers, etc.)

After removing all visible rust, I oiled everything (anything metal received a nice coating), and put them away. I also purchased a dehumidifier for my safe.

From anyone's experience, is there anything else I should do?
I plan on adding oil to my firearms every month or so now. Removing rust is no fun.

Buy a Golden Rod sized appropriately for your safe. Get a humidity meter. And get a big thing of desiccant. All of this can be had off Amazon for $50 give or take.

Wipe everything down with a light coat of oil or silicone cloth. I would check your safe daily until you get things under control. Then a weekly check and wipedown.

The meter should help you understand what's going on in there.

As a spray-on rust preventative, you should consider CorrosionX. I've been using it for years on my Saltwater fishing reels and equipment and it has done a superb job at preventing corrosion from starting. I have also been using it on guns with excellent results. They do make a product especially for guns but I've just been using their standard spray product.

I live near the beach. Hence higher humidity with a bit of salinity thrown in for good measure.

I use the same thing Californio does. I put 2 of them in each safe.
I also mark the date on each one with a felt pen so I know when I need to change them out.

I also keep each firearm slightly wet with oil. I use Pennzoil 5/20 synthetic for most things firearms related.

I also use silicon socks on all of my blued guns.

LASTLY. Once the guns are oiled. I NEVER touch the metal with my fingers.
I will wear gloves or only touch the wood, plastic, or rubber grips with my skin.

Thats what ya need to do if you live near the beach or have high humidity or have highly acidic skin. I have all 3.

A golden rod rod doesn't do much of anything if you live near high humidity and salt air.

Blued bolt handles are the WORST.... ! ! !

I now have very little oxidation issues in any of my safes.

I use corrosion x over the outside of my rifles and never had a rust issue since.

I have a golden rod in my safe but I went ahead and bought a bunch of these for my rifles anyway. Amazone carries the Allen versions and they are pretty affordable and have a tag to help ID them. Not only does it hopefully protect against rust but it also lets me pack them tighter since it's a layer of protection angainst dinging or gouging wood trying to get something from the back out.

I use gun socks from amazon and eezox. hasnt done me wrong yet and I live 10 minutes from ocean beach. everything rusts like crazy.
