Which is neither here nor there in the context of a "mad cow like" disease but it does give cause for the passing wonder of whether spike proteins cook out of meat.

It is also a genetically inherited disease. Your body does produce prion proteins. If a prion protein comes into contact with a misfolded prion, it will also milfold. The prion disease is caused by misfolded proteins. So as the misfolded prion proteins contact even more prion proteins, they create even more misfolded prion proteins. This causes the disease to accelerate at an increasing rate.

Sometimes it occurs spontaneously when a prion protein just happens to misfold at random to start the cycle.

Chronic wasting disease is a prion disease that affects deer, elk, moose, and reindeer. So far, there is no evidence that it can be passed on to people who consume meat of animals infected with CWD. Still, it is strongly advised that hunters have the carcasses of any of these animals they kill be tested for CWD before they consume them and wear protective gear while butchering them. If you suspect the animal you are stalking has CWD, move on and report it to the local fish and game warden. It is not worth the risk.
