Politeness in the covid or OT forum is a novelty.

It would appear that the latest fear mongering hasn?t taken hold. Despite a lot of CASES, the childhood pneumonia hasn?t resulted in fatalities. Calling it White Lung Disease, while sounding scary, didn?t catch. Who knows, I?m sure they aren?t done with us yet.

More China illness

I follow the epidemiology world fairly closely and apparently what is happening now in China is predictable. Unlike here in the US (despite all of the shrieking), China really DID lockdown during Covid which led to lots of people, particularly children, being shielded from all sorts of viruses that they would have normally been exposed to if lockdowns hadn?t happened. Coupled with that, there is a phenomenon called viral interference that was present during the Covid pandemic where Covid seemed to interfere with and suppress other viruses, included influenza. Although no one can explain how this works exactly, viral interference is a real phenomenon that has been noted during past epidemics and pandemics.

So, you now have a large group of Chinese children that have naive immune systems as a result of the lockdowns at the same time that numerous viruses are making a comeback now that Covid is on the tail end of its trajectory. Finally, you have a very rickety health care system in China that cannot process large amounts of patients at once due to staffing shortages. Put these all together and it looks like Covid all over again. But it?s not. It?s pneumonia on a large scale, coming all at once.

Further more, China uses antibiotics at a per capita rate 10 times higher than in the west. They use antibiotics at the drop of a hat, for any kind of little sniffle. Sometimes they just go to the hospital to get some antibiotics for the hell of it. What this did was to produce a lot of drug resistant bugs. The airborne stuff causes pneumonia, and likely to be very hard to get rid of.

Sometimes they just go to the hospital to get some antibiotics for the hell of it. What this did was to produce a lot of drug resistant bugs. I had it with covid. BAD!

yes, it's hard to get rid of... brutal part last several weeks, really bad part several,weeks more... lessened to bad, and many months later mild... it took a damn long time to get normal breathing.

The two week achy flu stuff wasn't pleasant(worst flu), but whatever... the pneumonia part is fking brutal. It tries to kill you, no doubt.

None worth shutting down society and ruining things for years (possible forever).

Antibiotic resistance is a huge problem and countries like China (and the US) are major culprits. We are at the stage that our most powerful class of antibiotics are meeting bugs that are impervious. This is truly scary and what used to be a minor wound (like a scratch) could come back to kill you if we enter a post-antibiotic world. There is a great series (podcast) devoted to this one topic.
