Newsom's only regret is that while he tries to be a populist, he now realizes that he was slow to let things go back to normal after Californians got tired of it.

My main takeaway is that the people of California are not good people. They are not the Americans I grew up with. In 2020 they got spooked, which proves they have no real understanding of freedom, rights, or basic human decency. Californians are not wise people. Wise people would have seen where lockdowns lead to and never started down that path in the first place.

As with any population at any given moment, there will be 'good' and 'bad' people. In 2020, no one (or very few) had any real idea what was going on and that can be one of the most terrifying of circumstances. Given those parameters, 'reaction' is often, at least initially, instinctive rather than rational.

Being a 'tyrant' and being a 'populist' aren't mutually exclusive. There is such a thing as 'tyranny of the majority' and 'popular dictatorships.'

'Wisdom' has several ways it is defined. I tend to like the description of the difference between knowledge and wisdom; i.e., having information or being aware of how to find it is knowledge, but knowing what to do with it effectively is wisdom. Now, actually knowing what to do with it and making it happen requires experience; thus, the expression... wisdom and experience.

Given that we had not experienced a 'pandemic' (or what was 'sold' as a pandemic) for over 100 years, how much 'experience' was actually out there, even for those who had the 'wisdom' to recognize what was happening probably shouldn't have been? In a sense, the population-at-large was placed in a 'no-win scenario' where knowledge was insufficient and unavailable (sometimes, deliberately so) or, at best, 'muddled,' resulting in an hesitancy in determining what needed to be done realistically/practically vs. what should be done as an abstract devotion to a concept. That was the 'moment,' that moment of hesitancy, which many took advantage of.

How that moment was taken advantage of and the outcome(s) is/are what ultimately determines 'good' from 'bad.' The problem? Those outcomes aren't always known when the decision appears 'necessary.' In retrospect, it's 'easy' to declare "they should have known." In the moment, when the rubber meets the road, it's not always such a 'given' in terms of what is right and what is wrong.

There are legitimate reasons why such things as lockdowns and states of emergency suspend certain laws, including restrictions on Constitutionally guaranteed rights. In this instance, however, what many forgot is that there are important caveats such as 'reasonably justifiable'... 'limited'... 'period of time.' It's why we saw increasing discussion regarding the length of time which constitutes an 'emergency.' It's why there was concern over the expansion of Government authority and how that applied to sensible/precautionary/Constitutional 'limitations' on Government. It's also why there was a growing chorus over whether the justifications being proffered were 'reasonable' given the circumstances and what was actually known.

Allowing things to go back to 'normal' isn't (or shouldn't be) based solely on when the population 'gets tired of it.' Neither should 'normalcy' be indefinitely suspended simply due to a lack of knowledge. Just like when someone declares - "The Constitution is not a suicide pact." - very much depends on whose ox is being gored, where that line is drawn between 'constitutional order' and the ability/need to respond a 'crisis of the moment' isn't necessarily always objectively clear.

Again and unfortunately, "Time" is required to determine the proper perspective. It's the Catch-22 which many 'in charge' are confronted with. It's why Patton famously (or infamously) declared that a 'good' plan, violently executed, was often better than a 'perfect' plan which came too late. Then there were those who criticized him on the basis of... "Old blood and guts. Our blood, his guts."

I wholeheartedly agree that Government controls and mandates persisted far too long and not always as a result of 'good intentions.' Further, I agree that far too many in power allowed 'personal issues' to overcome their sensibilities when it came to their job duties and public responsibilities. But, that doesn't make all the players 'nefarious' or 'criminals' simply because they followed orders or acted out of concern; i.e., I suspect there were far more who did that than there were the likes of Fauci or Newsom or similar. In fact, Trump could very well be placed in the former category, despite his actually implementing some of the things we now castigate as motivated by things other than 'good intentions.'

It's why, when conducting a retrospective evaluation, one needs to be cautious painting with a broad brush; e.g., "the people of California are not good people." When you claim "They are not the Americans I grew up with," does that apply universally or is it more appropriately applied to certain actors or groups? Is it based on a pragmatic perspective or a more abstract sensibility; neither of which can be said to 'universally' apply appropriately when push comes to shove? Remember, many who were objecting, even from the beginning, fall under the definition of 'the people of California.' Many more were 'hesitant,' but went along, for awhile, until the 'evidence' and, thus, the perspective, was clearer. Many of those too fall within the definition 'the people of California.' Recognize it or not, some of those were actually the people you grew up with who didn't have the power or authority to alter what was happening 'in the moment.'

Such is why there is a never-ending debate over what should or must constitute the limits on Government authority and power. Even the Founders were divided on that score. Do you honestly think modern generations are capable of 'better' judgment than the Founders?
