I don't know that it was so much designed against an ethnic group, as possibly if you believe in conspiracy theories, one could argue that was designed against an age group in a country that has a disproportionate non-productive aging population. China has a serious demographic problem and finding a way to cull the old/weak in a stealth manner is a likely possibility.

As I recall, India had a very low response to the original strain, then on the 3'rd or 4'th wave they started dropping like flies and had a pandemic there. So I do think that different strains have different effects based on ethnicity, but don't think any one ethnicity is totally immune.

To be fair... EVERY virus and EVERY medical problem has greater consequences in the obese and otherwise medically ill.

I work as a surgeon. As far as I can tell it can be much worse than the regular flu but is much more akin to the flu than to smallpox and black plague. Like all viruses, if you're obese or if you have COPD or are otherwise medically ill you should be very worried about it. If you're otherwise healthy it can kill you but that's very very unlikely. Just like the flu. Probably worse. But not orders-of-magnitude worse.
