Just being intellectually honest here - the main reason masks don't work, is that people are morons and cannot possibly be trusted to use them correctly. I never once went out during the "mask required" times, and failed to see at least several people pulling down their masks, or sticking their dirty unwashed fingers up under their mask. Of course they don't work, but really it isn't completely the mask's fault. If you're wearing a gas mask, you can't lift it up to scratch your nose while in a gas cloud. Mask works fine, human doesn't.
Surgical masks have been proven, to help surgeons keep bacteria/germs out of the open wounds of their patients, within a sanitary room. It's a very narrow use-case. Surgeons don't wear them to protect themselves. When they need their own protection from something that actually might be airborne, they wear an enclosed pressure suit. No doctor would ever go into an ebola ward and say - "oh, this t-shirt on my face is good enough". And I don't buy the "better than nothing" argument because false confidence makes you take risks that you wouldn't otherwise or be complacent.
If you wore a properly fitted N95, and followed required sanitation processes the same way a surgeon does, 100% of the time, I bet you'd be pretty good at not catching anything (flu, cold, covid, etc.). That's also not at all a realistic way to live life.Comment

covid isn't transmitted via standalone viral molecules, it's transmitted via sputum and aerosol.
i've seen most of the debunk tests, they pass condensation and vapor through the n95s and claim they don't work. they won't work with respirators either unless they use a filter raped for vapors, but they're being dishonest, because that's not how the virus is transmitted.Comment
