Well people have been misusing the term "Covid" ever since China pressured everyone into not calling it by its place of origin or by its actual name. Covid-19 is actually the name of the illness the virus can cause, but people have been using it interchangeably as the name of the virus itself. The name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2, but if people were calling this SARS all the time they might start figuring out this is all China's fault, and we can't have that.

It is basically the same thing as referring to HIV as AIDS. HIV can give you AIDS, but AIDS refers to the disease not the virus. Same thing with Covid-19.
