EU Parliament Pres has died due to "dysfunction of the immune system"

European Parliament President David Sassoli has died at the age of 65. Recently he's been hospitalized for legionnaires' disease several times, but for some reason kept relapsing. He's been in the hospital again since late December. The day before he died his spokesman released this statement:

This hospitalization was necessary because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system

What could be causing "dysfunction of the immune system" that cannot be treated by Europe's best medicine?
