    San Bernardino ICU numbers

    From my old coworker.

The number of patients in ICU in San Bernardino County. Why no news about the hospitals being overwhelmed with non Covid patients now?

    12/08/2020
    298 Non Covid
    226 Covid
    6 Suspected Covid
    = 530 Patients in ICU

    12/08/2021
    442 Non Covid
    92 Covid
    2 Suspected Covid
    = 536 Patients in ICU

Mrs golfish is a case manager (BSN) at Arrowhead County Hospital. We were just talking about the increase in covid patients that have been vax-ed.She said that there's a pretty big increase.

Wife works in a big hospital in the IE, and sends me the stats whenever they are posted. They were sending them every day, then dropped it to every week, and now it is even less frequently.

Last time was about a week ago and they had 12 total. Since they started keeping track of vax status, it was pretty consistently 60% or more vaxed vs un-vaxed.

You guys do know that of the total# of people in most ICUs in the country are going to have a majority of vaccinated people, but not for the reasons you think. I'll let you guys ponder the unponderable reasons why....hint: base rates.

I did residency at San Bernardino County Med Center in the early/mid 90s. The ICU was ALWAYS at or above capacity, even during "off season". During cold and flu season there were gurneys in the hallways and some patients who never even left the Emergency Department due to lack of space for seriously or critically ill patients.

Hospitals must run at maximum capacity due to cuts in healthcare. If they have open beds, they are losing money. Hospitals that lose money don't stay in business. It is our country's, and especially our state's, short-sighted attitude to save money at all costs by underpaying healthcare providers to save money. This sets up the system to be constantly shorted, but it has long been a concern about what would happen if a sudden need for care hit in a widespread region.

But wait.... Ball-Boy and his pal Dildoer (and lest we forget, BigMike... wherever he disappeared to) repeatedly told us that this isn't true. Who am I to believe, our own self appointed internet "experts", or an actual doctor with actual experience?

                          I'm soooo confused.

That is what happens when we nationalize healthcare (Obama Care). It is run poorly by the government. Making healthcare a "right" mandates it must be the same quality of service for everyone. That insure poor quality for everyone.

Private hospitals that take cash could insure competition. Not everyone should get the same quality of care. It idea is born from the rantings of Marxists. Time was we had county hospitals for those who did not pay. We had the better hospital for those who did. The Doctors were required to do community service at the county hospital. The quality of care was good at the county and best at the the pay for play hospital. It was a great system. Now everyone gets super expensive poor quality care. And, people like me pay for everybody.

Each hospital has an administrator (business manager) that wirks to keep the vacancy rate very low....just like the manager of a Motel 6.
