The vaccine was effective against most of the existing variants. It was not effective against Delta. The result was all variants besides Delta went extinct, while Delta thrived. New variants are sub-variants of Delta, as it further adapts to living in and spreading among the vaccinated.

The vaccine causing a much more infectious variant specifically adapted to the vaccinated becoming dominant was predicted even before the vaccine rollout, and we got to watch it happen in real time.

it was what we were warned by various virologists the result would be from mounting a vaccination campaign during a pandemic many months ago.

He was just recounting his observation after having taken a "wait and see" stance since then.

It's like the subtle distinction between an "I told you so" and a "you were told".

I think it's simply the majority in CA have accepted COVID is here permanently along with lifelong whole famiily vax and boosters in order to retain their liveliehood, education, and standard of living. So no reason to be interested in more news.

It didn't stop mutating, but nothing new has been able to outcompete Delta via infectivity, so new lineages die out.

Delta might be peak infectivity for SARS-CoV-2 (Famous last words).
