Pre-Covid-19 three things typically happened before someone was diagnosed with an infection:
1. Patient would have symptoms.
2. Doctor would do a quick antigen test in the office. This shows the body is making antibodies for the disease.
3. Doctor would send a sample to a lab for a culture test. This will show the disease is active and growing.
With Covid-19 a positive PCR test is being taken as definitive proof that someone is infected. The PCR test shows the presence of the thing it is testing for but that does not mean a person is infected with the disease. It does not show the state of the disease either. As many of the microbe tests of bathroom surfaces shows, there are lots of nasty microbes everywhere. That does not mean everyone that steps foot into a bathroom will get infected with every microbe found.
