This isn't necessarily true if it is an arthropod dispersed virus. In that case, the host (mosquito, etc.) survives and the end target (us) doesn't need to survive to continue the spread.

For a respiratory spread virus, the host MUST survive long enough to spread the virus or the virus dead ends. If it becomes too deadly, the host gets ill and dies before spread has occurred. The natural evolution is to become more communicable but weaker. That ensures the survival and replication of the virus.

It is how viruses work, and you'd think that a "virologist" would understand that.
