A third dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine can "strongly" boost protection against the Delta variant -- beyond the protection afforded by the standard two doses, suggests new data released by Pfizer on Wednesday.

The data posted online, which are expected to be discussed in a company earnings call on Wednesday morning, suggest that antibody levels against the Delta variant in people ages 18 to 55 who receive a third dose of vaccine are greater than five-fold than following a second dose.

I'd actually expect that 3rd shot to substantially increase the immunity. That shouldn't surprise or offend anyone.

However, that fact in isolation does not mean we should be getting that booster at this time. Maybe if you have very high risk factors.

And seriously, there are people who have suppressed immune systems who should strongly consider getting this.

Myself, I'm hoping the Novavax will come on the market in a few months (possibly sooner). So far the protection looks very good and the side effect profile looks pretty good. If that works out as expected, toward the end of this year I'll probably do the Novavax as a booster (I got the Moderna finished in January).

To me it seems likely that the mix of different kinds of Covid-19 vaccines will give better immunity to a wider range of WuFlu variants.

This is not really something new. It is possible they timed things for dealing with the market, but if people have been paying attention it shouldn't have a lot of effect.

Anyone who predicted an insignificant boost in immunity from a properly timed booster shot just hasn't been paying attention. Of course it will boost things. But whether a substantial number of people will actually benefit and whether the risk/benefit ratio is good is an entirely different question. And remember that someone (I think it was the CDC) declined to recommend that booster.

And in any case a whole bunch of us have been expecting the recommendation for yearly boosters since before the vaccines were even available. That's in large part because we just don't know how good the immunity will be over time in people who have the infection or the vaccine so the default is likely to be for boosters until we have a better idea. It's really too early to be able to predict long-term good immunity from any of the vaccines or from infection.

So it really should not affect Pfizer stock. Maybe it will affect their stock and other stuff, but it really shouldn't since the obvious should have been factored in a long time ago.

I saw a news commentator who was asked why a company would keep suggesting more shots if they weren't effective. The statement was, "Have you ever seen a CEO who didn't recommend customers buying more of their product?" Yeah, I guess that there is that...
