What some of this seems to boil down to is a different level of 'awareness' that is possible with today's technology as opposed to the comparative lack of information availability in the past.
Still, as we often observe, while the numbers may be 'small' in comparison to the overall universe, it can suck to be part of the 'select few' who were impacted.
