For those young people who do not feel moved by patriotism or propelled by economics to enlist in the military, there should be other options for national service like AmeriCorps.

1 year? The hell they going to contribute for 1 year? Or maybe 8 - 9 months out of basic and maybe less after advanced training.

Well, maybe "free college" shouldn't be free.
Service doesn't have to be military. It can be Just about anything.
Service at a food kitchen, or pantry.
Service to maintain a state park. Or federal.
10 hours of some kind of civic service per week for a year might open up some indoctrinated youth to what is really out there.sigpicComment
