There's an article in the East Bay (Contra Costa) Times that talks about how Merced is the last county to leave purple status and how it has been "flouting" COVID-19 rules in terms of bars & restaurants & pool halls, etc., since May 2020. Their Sherriff, Verne Warnke, cited the U.S. Constitution for not enforcing laws against those businesses, and not enforcing mask laws. If you read the article deeply enough and compare to other data I pulled from the East Bay Times on cumulative deaths per 100k, you can see they fared basically average then neighboring counties. (They claim their status remaining "purple" was do to a fluke of timing of data reporting.)
This shows how lockdowns are meaningless. Merced is far from the worst and basically average based on neighboring counties with a similar economy.
