Masks can not stop the spread of viruses. Maybe slow it a bit but in the end all who can be, will be infected. Yet we continue to pretend that ritualized masks, social distancing and arbitrary restrictions will cure covid. No society has ever stopped a virus by such measures. No virus has ever been cured. Treated- yes, vaccine-yes, but a cure? never. The government-media gaslighting is relentless. Most comply without protest, to fit in and to please their government appointed master. They choose not see that their society, wealth and freedoms are evaporating. It baffles me.

What ever happened to the 1 billion dollars of masks that our Calif Gov Newsome ordered from China? I haven't received any free masks from Calif yet? I haven't even seen any gov PSA on how to get them? But I have seen a ton of Calif paid commercials on how to vote though.

I think you are referring to this purchase.

The state will buy an additional 120 million N95 masks and 300 million surgical masks, Newsom said, adding to the hundreds of millions the state has already purchased and received from the company. The state will pay BYD $315 million: $255 million for the N95s and $60 million for the surgical masks, according to the new contract.

California will pay $2.13 per N95 mask, a decrease in price from the $3.30 the state paid BYD for the first batch of shipments.

I don't think those are intended for anyone but health care workers. The price is a bit high but not overly so, provided the masks are of good quality (the appear to be FDA approved). For pandemic pricing, it's actually quite a good price. I haven't followed this story much, though.

We could ask why we have to keep buying what is basically a national security strategic asset from China, but no point since clearly this administration does not see domestic PPE production as a high priority.

You know what? I follow milsurp stuff pretty closely as a long time 07. Interordance just imported a few thousand M1 Carbines from Ethiopia. Price is 999-1600, with the $1600 ones being "like new". Now how did they get there? During WWII M1 Carbines were a mobilized product. A whole bunch of companies that never made guns were given contracts by the War Dept. to make M1Cs. IBM, Rock-Ola (jukeboxes), Postal Meter, Irwin-Pederson (tools), etc. The effort was a massive success, with more than 5 million M1Cs cranked out. They made so many and so quickly that after the war all the contracts had to be cancelled and sadly many employees were laid off (a history lesson not lost on Mike Bowen, CEO of Prestige Ameritech, the biggest PPE maker in the US). And then we had so many of those things that we gave them away as cold war gifts all over the world.

It's entirely possible for us to crank these things out in massive amounts. But I don't think that's going to happen.

At this point if you breath air there is a chance you are going to get the virus just like the flu. No mask is going to help at this point. Your only protection is stay in your bubble and keep all others out.

Totally irrelevant if masks aren't effective - to say nothing of the fact that there are far more people suffering from depression and other mental health issues due to the lockdowns. Just another example of focusing on a very small piece of the picture rather than looking at the big picture and weighing unintended consequences of any rash governmental action (yes, I realize that's redundant).
