Not sure why it seems so unbelievable to you. A government that is able to place 11 million people under house arrest or order an entire province of 9 million to take a COVID19 test within three days (along with a populace that holds obedience to government orders as a norm) has major advantages when it comes to infectious disease control.

This isn't a praise of the CCP or totalitarianism, but it is what it is. There's a reason why those in the US military have significantly reduced freedoms compared to civilians. 330 million people largely left to make their own choices are going to be a lot less efficient that 330 million people moving in lock-step.

That doesn't mean at all that the Chinese model is what we should be doing. But it does demonstrate that control over the virus is not only possible, but sustainable. Unfortunately, the current administration's response is moving rapidly toward 13th century deus vult and "the fight is hopeless, we are all going to get it, so let's just let it have its way with us and hope it'll leave us alone after the American people get culled".

In spite of us possessing the technology, expertise, material, and money to put up the best counter-infection response in the history of the world, if we truly wanted to.
