The virus have several components that suggests it came from a lab. Gain of function research basically means enhanced in the lab and we are dealing with those consequences that we otherwise wouldnt be because of those enhancements. A furin cleavage site is in the genome as an insert rather than mutations of nucleotides that were there, its like somebody spliced it in, which could happen naturally but it may well not have. It also has a flanking sequence that is not seen in nature very frequently. There are elements of the genome that are suspicious and suggest possible lab manipulation.

Evolution in the lab takes place and changes that the researcher in charge want and other things that the researcher do not even consider, happen as well. Adaptation to lab conditions is a natural occurrence. One of the questions is this virus is highly transmissible unless youre outdoors. That raises a red flag. Bats live outdoors so is it possible this virus has adapted to the lab environment; an indoor environment. Organisms isolated in the lab and are generally kept in an axenic state therefore do not have to compete for resources with other microorganisms, so they tend to turn off genes that come at a higher metabolic cost. Once outdoors it can induce a evolutionary or selective signal that is going to retrain the virus to be increasingly more tolerant of UV light.

When a virus moves from one species to another it is not well positioned. It is typically poor at its job because it doesnt have an evolutionary experience with that host so its not good at leaping between that hosts cells which means its always in low numbers. Its also not good from transmitting from one individual to the next and thats the key question when something leaps into a new species and becomes a pandemic its because it has solved that second problem. There is no evidence in the case of this virus that that happened. It showed up in Wuhan and spread immediately. It became pandemic. It already had the means and experience. How it got that experience we dont know. What we do know is that this virus was well adapted to our cells and well adapted to transmit between individuals and that is conspicuous

he even predicted trump would face a pandemic.

btw, it is already documented that our govt stopped the GoF experiments because they deemed it too dangerous.

One of the conspiracy theories that has plagued attempts to keep people informed during the pandemic is the idea that the coronavirus was created in a laboratory. But the vast majority of scientists who have studied the virus agree that it evolved naturally and crossed into humans from an animal species, most likely a bat.

Of course if you believe scientists are controlled by a vast worldwide conspiracy of governments, big pharma, elites, aliens, demons, other stupid sh@t, then obviously an elite journal like Nature or a top university like UMN, cannot be trusted more than a random Chinese scientist.

Why do people find conspiracy theories so compelling? I totally don't get it.
