First Dine-In meal experience at a Restaurant during Phase 1 Re-Opening (Texas)

So yesterday I was excited to finally be able to go sit down at a restaurant to have a meal out. I hate drive thrus because my food is not to proper temp by the time I get home (see Cold Soggy Fries) and I think eating in the car is disgusting as I like to keep my car clean.

I chose In-N-Out as my first non home cooked meal post COVID-19 lockdown and was really looking forward to a burger out since I have eaten at home exclusively for the last 2 months plus.

The bad news: In-N-Out here in TX was still only doing drive thru orders. **** me!!!

There I was defeated, dejected, tail between my legs I head over to Whataburger (I don’t really like them nearly as much but I basically modify my burger order to “clone” an Animal Style burger). Texas lets me down AGAIN as the employee in the parking lot says they are still trying to figure out how to reopen the dining room and meet the guidelines. (Doesn’t Corporate have bean counters that get paid to figure stuff like this out!?!)

So I suggested a local Mom N Pop burger joint and my GF reminds me they are still only doing drive through orders.

Desperate I call a divey little Mom N Pop burger joint that lets you bring in your own beer/alcohol and ask if they are open for dine-in... the girl on the phone says YESSS we are!!!!!!

The Phase 1 reopen here in TX brought a few noticeable changes. They had a portable hand washing station at the entrance I didn’t use, menus were now printed on a piece of paper and given out to customers to keep, video game machines were all turned off and had a hand written sign explaining it was part of the Phase 1 COVID-19 restrictions. And instead of a bottle of ketchup we were given a pile of ketchup packets.

Food was great Fried Pickle Spears w Spicy Ranch, Double Cheesburger w/ Green Chilies and a Lemonade service was meh as usual. (Waitresses only make $2.13 per hour here and live off tips so YSR please don’t eat out here if you visit TX! )

Is was nice to be out at a restaurant they were busy but not packed (as per usual) so I didn’t see any signage but supposedly restaurants are not supposed to be more than 25% capacity until next week which is supposed to be 50% and so on every week until we get back to normal.

I thought my first FREEDOM burger experience here in Texas would have been less of a hassle but even here the local news on TV while waiting for my food was fear mongering beef/meat processing plant supply line concerns, restaurants reopening with caution, and then more stock footage of people laying in hospital beds because of the Rona.

Well there you have it even here in “Free” America the “Abundance of Caution” is still the order of the day for now.

Its gonna be a while before we get back to pre-covid life. Get over it already. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Two servers, actually a busboy and a bartender/server, at my favorite local cantina, working 5 days a week handling the to go orders came down sick with Covid-19 almost two weeks ago.
These two guys are like brothers to me, both recovering at home.

An employee at the local Trader Joe's and another at the Gelson's Market did too just last week.

Maybe caution should still be exercised a bit.

The problem is that many restaurants and fast food places will probably remain drive through forever.. Seeing profits the same with less employees.. Don't need to clean dining area. The real problem is that so many people don't mind waiting in drive through and don't mind lukewarm burgers and limp fries when they get home..All restaurant take out food is worst when eaten at home.. Olive Garden, IHOP, Chilis, Filippis.

Should have gone to Dairy Queen like I did! Chicken strips, taco and blizzard. Lots of seating and f0olks were happy to see us.

Whataburger and Jucy's are still closed for dining in

Get a breville convection toaster over, best $300 I ever spent. Toss those fries in for 5 min!

We're very rural with a hand full of restaurants in town in which we rarely eat at.

Both my wife and I share the cooking duties. Every so often, we'll drive down the hill to the nearest big town/city for a night out together. Although we enjoy the change of scenery, both us always say, "We could have done better at home" as far as the food goes.

Once a person really get's into cooking, baking and BBQn' from home, restaurant food is just.....meh

I hope some of you folks are trying new recipes and learning to cook from home these days. You'll thank yourself later.

Many people dont realize that federally you only have to pay tipped employees 2$ an hour.

Share a favorite recipe, if you don't mind. Could use something to try my hand at, a different flavor than what I'm used to. Thanks in advance.

CA is one of the states where that kind of wage slavery doesn't fly. Lots of things I think CA has arse backwards but that isn't one of them.
