    Covid-19 infection in the family

A quick summary of a COVID-19 incident that is going on in our family.

Mom is 85 years old and suffered a stroke 1.5 years ago. Since then she is been in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) as she is bedridden requiring 24/7 care and suffers from significant dementia. On Apr 2, the SNF she was in had a Covid-19 outbreak. On Apr 8 all patients were evacuated due to staff not showing up for work. My mom was taken to the Indio Federal pop up hospital and was subsequently placed in a different SNF on Apr 10. When this occurred, we found out she had been tested in the original SNF on Apr 4 for Covid-19 and had come back negative.

On Apr 18, we were informed she had been tested again on Apr 10 at the new facility, and was now positive, but showing no negative signs of Covid-19. She has been tested again on Apr 24 and while we are waiting for results, she still shows no signs of decline and the medical staff says the chances of her developing symptoms at this point are pretty much non-existent.

A little more info for those interested, as far as I know my Mom has no respiratory issues and she has not been given any meds for Covid-19.

Just passing along a personal data point for anyone interested, especially the old geezers.

    Prayers said.

I know this is of little consequence but most people, even the elderly with conditions, are asymmetric.

These must be anxious times for you, I feel for you.

Thanks everyone and I think we are past the danger zone (nurses words, not mine) and expect all to be well going forward.

It was probably a blessing disguise that the second SNF didn't tell us she was positive until more than a week after the second test. By that time we figured (maybe hoped) that she was going to stay asymptomatic and get through it fine. If we had known earlier there would have been many more sleepless nights.

Thank you for sharing toro1, I pray she remains asymptomatic and suffers no ill effects from this.

Your poor mother. Nobody should have to face that. I imagine this ordeal is very scary for her. I'm glad she is so far OK. Thanks for sharing.

God be with you. I did the caregiving/care manager thing for a similar situation over a decade ago and remember facility/environment change was a bugger, irrespective of the physical health issues. Hopefully your mother trends to the more docile, mine trended to psychotic so was a handful. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone and I wanted to get the word out that even if you or a loved one is old and get the CV, its not necessarily a death sentence.

                    User120312,
you are spot on about the environment change. My Mom is the category of losing it when something changes so I am guessing all emergency personnel had their hands full. We have been forbidden to see her (understandable) since mid Feb so we have not seen this round first hand.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Given the time that has passed, I think she will come through it fine.
