Covid tests in prisons: large infection, most asymptomatic

Prisons are turning out to be a great petri dish:

“We weren’t always able to pinpoint where all the cases were coming from,” said Annette Chambers-Smith, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. As the virus spread, they began mass testing.

They started with the Marion Correctional Institution, which houses 2,500 prisoners in north central Ohio, many of them older with pre-existing health conditions. After testing 2,300 inmates for the coronavirus, they were shocked. Of the 2,028 who tested positive, close to 95% had no symptoms.

“It was very surprising,” said Chambers-Smith, who oversees the state’s 28 correctional facilities.
Suprising to whom? Everyone knows this is flu-like

Closers: "See! We must control the SPREAD! This spreads so FAST! Let's continue staying inside. Wait for vaccine, because science."
Openers: "See! Most people don't even know they have it. Let's get back to work"

But certainly we can conclude that either the current tests really suck (ie. all those inmates didn't really have the covid-19 version of the common cold virus corona) or this virus is rather harmless to most people. Only the elderly and sick need worry - just as it is with virtually everything in life.

    More from the article...

"As mass coronavirus testing expands in prisons, large numbers of inmates are showing no symptoms. In four state prison systems — Arkansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia — 96% of 3,277 inmates who tested positive for the coronavirus were asymptomatic, according to interviews with officials and records reviewed by Reuters."

And this is freaking Reuters, not FOX or Newsmax or Breitbart or...

It's time to end the charade, seriously.

Considering that about 90% are infected, what we can pretty safely assume is they are letting a criminal out of jail to infect you and I.

But at least they won't re-offend right? Otherwise De Blasio would be "dismayed."

A Brooklyn man was arrested Saturday for allegedly attacking and nearly raping a woman just 10 days after he was released from Rikers Island, where he was held on a separate rape charge, over concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, according to a report.

It's reassuring to know there were plenty of tests available for convicts but not for law abiding taxpayers.

The double whammy is that testing was not done on the "zero bond" detainees that were released to our communities during this COVID situation...and we know some of those folks immediately started committing crimes and those infected from their jail stay are moving the disease through our communities.

We have plenty of testing capacity now. What we lack is free testing. If you are willing to pay for it, you can get a test.

The only thing that article tells you is that the virus is super contagious. If, you test positive for the virus and are currently asymptomatic it doesn't mean that you will never get sick from it. Most of those prisoners are almost certainly presymptomatic. The incubation period before symptoms is anywhere from 2-14 days and then after you show symptoms it can be weeks before you die or recover. Prisoners are younger but less healthy on average than the general population, it'll be interesting to see what happens to these infected prisoners over the next 3-6 weeks. Let's revisit Marion Correctional Institution topic at the end of May.

The only thing your response tells me is that you assume the prison was only recently infected.
