    Georgia... Day 1

All states' eyes are on Georgia.... The home of the CDC...The CDC!!!

Other states' decisions to open may depend on what happens there..

No business has to open if they decide not to.. It's up to the business and up to the customer to patronize the business..

Customers willing to accept the risk..

A hurrah for openers there and elsewhere and an Oh **** for closers there and elsewhere..

Unless Trump issues an executive order to shut them down....

Yeah we'll get to see if Trump was bluffing with this "disagreement" with the opening. I'm hoping that was just a CYA move and that he leaves them alone.

Without experimentation we will never know the actual best course. The Georgia plan looks to be a modified version of what Sweden is doing.

The only way out of this is herd immunity. We don't get there with max lockdown. Will Georgia's plan cause more infection than a max lockdown? Absolutely it will.

If it causes a medium burn with case loads the hospitals can deal with, it is a success.

As a nation we seem to be policy driven by "if it saves one life.". That doesn't apply here. Lives will be lost. I think the max lockdown may be much worse overall.

Not even that. Because with this issue, no matter which "side" you take, you choose to sacrifice lives.

Full lockdown? OK, well the economic destruction will cause a depression, rampant poverty, and if you don't understand the relationship between poverty and all kinds of crappy life outcomes you haven't been paying attention for the last few millenia. So you back-load the deaths, but the number of deaths is far greater.

No lockdown? OK, but then you front-load the deaths because there's no vaccine nor herd immunity and maybe you have an Italian situation where your hospital system gets overrun because your people are filthy or live on top of each other like NYC or you've got tons of Chinese immigrants fresh from Wuhan like Northern Italy or etc.

Somewhere in between? Little of both.

So it's not even the chicken-little, "if it saves just one life" BS that so many morons cling to. It's just pure panic. These people are so mentally shut down from fear that they are applying their usual irrational BS to places where it doesn't even apply in order to prevent themselves from having a total breakdown.

Good post, and I think this is probably pretty accurate.

The thing to remember is that this is by and large killing older folks that are already sick. 94% of hospitalizations in the latest study have pretty serious underlying issues. Getting the MUCH LESS vulnerable back to work and in circulation will speed the herd immunity up. They key is not overwhelming the system and it looks by all accounts that is not going to happen.

In the end, locking down will not "save lives", it prolongs the inevitable.

Immunity from covid is not well understood. Are you sure its a good idea put all your eggs in that basket?

I completely agree that the virus is not well understood. We have no idea of what lies ahead.

It's the only basket we have today. Essentially every other immune system defeated virus infection results in some immunity. Many times it is strong and long lasting like measles. Other times not so much.

We basically have no treatment beyond supportive measures. Any of the possible treatments have studies with both positive and negative results.

One thing we can't do is stay locked down for years. The world is not currently setup for that.

                  What is your plan?

Georgia is the alpha test. Their success or failure will dictate what the rest of the country does.
