Its hard to make any conclusion when its suspected that their death toll might actually be not just in the 1,000s but actually in the 100,000s. City of Wuhan alone had at least 30,000 deaths if not more.

Sure, it all may be just a consequence of lack of diagnosis//suppressing the stats, but it may also be explained by the fact that China knew that they had a possible epidemic so they locked down Wuhan to ALL DOMESTIC travel, yet left it totally open to INTERNATIONAL travel for a very long time.

It seems that the most likely explanation is that the virus was being studied, leaked from their lab, they figured that out and decided that if their economy was going to burn, so would the rest of the globe's.

There's even very convincing evidence that China not only stopped shipping PPE to the rest of the world, but went on a tear to buy up EVERYHING that they could get their hands on. Now, they are selling it back to the rest of the world at scalper's prices.

The virus got loose and China figured out a way to weaponize it.

My wife has a client who returned from China, and was NOT in Wuhan, in January 2020. He said something bad was happening and that hundreds of thousands of people were sick and dying. He gave her masks ans gloves and told her to prep for SHTF.

She told him she was married to mr. SHTF, but thanked him for the information.

OP this is how epidemics grow. Hubei is a province roughly the same size as Washington State and Wuhan is the major city in that province where the outbreak first started. Mainland China went into a lockdown the likes of which we haven't ever seen in America to try and prevent the spread of the contagion and, if one believes their reporting, it worked very effectively. Which isn't super hard to believe really, if you literally lock people inside their own residences for a month or more and allow no travel whatsoever inside a country which is a police state there is virtually no way for the disease to continue spreading. Those that have it will either get better or they won't but they can't spread it far afield.

As a result of those heavy handed tactics Hubei has certainly born the brunt of this pandemic on mainland China.

The legendary Soviet General Zhukov was once asked how he had handled German minefields during WWII. What strategies did he use to defeat the German defenses?

"When we come to a minefield, we attack as if it were not there."

Soviet and Chinese perspectives are often similar when it comes to ends justifying the means. The strategies do work very well - but they are deeply unfair to those who end up paying the price. IIRC, 11 million people were locked up in their apartments for around 80 days. They were not allowed to leave, and were forced to use up all their savings on food deliveries at inflated prices. Hunger was a real problem for many families who ran out of money. Savings, dreams, nest eggs, retirements - wiped out.

In a way, the mask directives here in the US are similar in this regard. Certainly, they do intrude upon our individual freedoms. But on the other hand, if everyone wears a mask it is significantly harder for the virus to hop from person to person. Even a torn up t-shirt is miles better in terms of keeping germs in than grubby hands that may or may not come up in time to cover a sneeze or cough.
