I hope COVID19 and what we're going through in the world right now drastically changes the way our populace practices hygiene. I even more so hope it changes the behaviors of those when they're feeling sick.
Anytime I get sick I stay home and try to minimize my contact with others. I've never wanted to be the reason someone else has gotten sick. On the other end I ridicule people who come near me or come into work when they're sick. The cavalier attitude some people have about it is appalling and selfish.
The excuses for it are lame as well. "I don't have PTO to use" or "I don't want to use PTO when I am sick". Well how about I don't want you to come into work sick and thus infect me and your other co-workers? Maybe we don't want to have to use our time off because of some dipstick coming into work sick?
Back in February a co-worker came into work sick. As usual I ridiculed them for their selfish decision. They didn't like it too much but I don't really give a crap. You come to work sick around me, then prepare to be shamed publicly. Fast forward to mid March. The same co-worker started flipping out and having a meltdown over why our office was not shut down yet and when we'd be getting sent home. Truly a flabbergasting experience to say the least.
This same person couldn't understand my concern when they came into work sick a month prior. They couldn't understand that no one else wants to get sick. That no one else wants to bring a sickness home because a co-worker didn't stay home when ill. That maybe some people they work with are immunocompromised or that they live with people who are. Yet the same co-worker has a meltdown over the novel Conrona Virus.
We all should take a long hard look at ourselves and our practices going forward and vow to be better.
