Thanks for the shortcut Skyhawk. Sadly true for many American industries.

FDA regulators for importing surgical masks.

We don't China's anything goes system, but it's clear our system is unnecessarily complicated and burdensome.

His masks may cost a dime each, but a made-in-China mask might go for two cents.
Kinda makes the case for chinese made, could have 5x the stockpile for the same cash.

Honestly, for 5x cost, it's hard to think of anything of equivalent quality to be worth buying simply to have to peel off a stars and stripes sticker

But I'd bet you won't work for the wages they pay in China right?

His quandary is real - almost went into bankruptcy - the way they operate, surprised hospitals haven't found a way to charge pts. for the staffs masks

This is the kind of problem that's going to require new thinking - we need to prioritize some manufacturing and support

So now that masks are desperately needed, is he still only working one shift? Is that because he's sticking it to us for not buying his masks before? Is it because he only has enough staff for one shift? Only enough material to support one shift?

                Excellent journalism right there...

If you read it - he's been burned before - expanded plant, hired staff for 24/7 etc and when crisis was over they canceled his orders and went back buying from China. Stuck with enlarged plant-staff - no orders

Sure, but at least China is skimping on the quality of materials, right?

He likely only has enough staff and materials for one shift, and going out to purchase more materials and hire on/train a bunch of new employees (or pay overtime to current employees) will only cost him more money when NO ONE wants to pay anything extra currently for the masks-and they WILL all run back to China when the crisis is over.

We really can't expect the company to take another financial hit so that everyone else can profit financially.

Hey look, a different source that actually discusses the details. It's almost like the whole point of my post was highlighting that some places leave out all the critical information and pass it off as a "story".

It says he is hiring but it takes time to build more machines and train workers. His demand will also die instantly when this is over and he will have all that capital investment now a liability and his unemployment rates will go to crap.

I have no doubt the hospitals will be ordering from the cheapest source again as soon as the can.
