I live in Ventura county where agriculture is big line of work. We all know that most of them are illegals. On my way to work I always see farm workers picking strawberries, lettuce and other produce. If they all of a sudden start getting sick, who is ready to go work the fields.?

How many would go pick the produce if immigrants refuse to do it

I don't think you'll find many Calgunners, but I'm sure there's a load of Calgunner's grandkids that would answer the call.
BTW
I think most are here on work visas..... I've always said I'd be willing to pay 5 bucks for a head of iceberg lettuce if it meant we could get rid of all the illegals here.Comment

Did it for several years in high school. I am thinking about looking into added jobs right now. I make less than $60k annual so a few extra bucks for some night or evening work will be good for the ammo pile.1. Compared to what?
2. At what cost?
3. What hard evidence do you have?

My guess is if they raised the wages to cover the work(hard labor) changed the laws covering overtime etc - a lot more would consider trying it.
Too old now - but in my teens picked grapes - when immigration was enforced, it was not unusual for growers to hire family, friends, neighbors to help. There was a whole group of legal pickers that moved up and down from CA to WASH. to cover different picking seasons.
"workers picking strawberries"
In Fresno that's covered by the Hmong - they've pretty well cornered the market on growing, picking and selling. They do it so well that no matter which roadside stand/farm you go to the price is always the same.Last edited by SW1917; 03-30-2020, 5:10 PM.Comment

I'd pay more for produce if need be, but my wife and I are able to afford it, not all are. I've always thought a lot more lazyish teens need to be reintroduced to the hard work ethic that a lot of us had instilled in us many years ago.
Low paying min wage jobs used to be intended for young inexperienced people to get introduced to work, responsibility, reliability, and learn how to be employable. But that's a whole other thread...Member & Contributor CRPA/NRAComment

Picking, hunching, squatting, bending, lugging etc all day, in the elements, for low pay (which a portion(s) is probably pilfered by greedy bosses as tribute), all for an unappreciative public who dams your very existence at every turn. I'd say most wouldn't last a day and the vast majority would be crying after and hour or two. Low skill my arse.
btw, if you are good, you can make over $15/hr picking lettuce, but it is tough on your back unless you're young or in good shape.Last edited by theLBC; 03-30-2020, 5:31 PM.Comment

I did it for a few years on my Grandfather's farm, from planting to harvest and everything in-between. I have no illusions that I could currently do everything required, at a good pace, and for prolonged periods of time.
To those who have never done it, I highly recommend it, if only as a life experience, and to further appreciate what really goes into it.Comment
