FDA Issues Emergency Authorization on Game-Changing 5-Minute COVID-19 Test

Hmm, how accurate can it be with several types of coronavirus and DNA amplification that would also amplify the % of virus.

Friends in the medical field are claiming accurate tests would take significant time to perform and the current tests "are a joke."

Surely it won't hurt. There are numerous other competing tests and vendors, though. I've lost track of them all.

Your friends are out of date. This doesn't use a PCR approach. https://www.alere.com/en/home/produc...ls/id-now.html Basically they have highly selective RNA primers, flagged with beacons, and a highly selective replicase that operates at a single temperature. A test like this is only as good as its primers, but given what we know of this particular virus, it can be remarkably accurate indeed.

What it won't do is give you any idea of mutation or strain identification, in all likelihood. An unlucky mutation might even escape detection entirely, but this is improbable.

as_rocketman, didn't John Hopkins just release info that covid-19 is a DNA protein?

Don't know what you're referring to -- so far as I know all coronaviruses are RNA-based. The genome for our current pestilence is also public, so there are no surprises expected in that regard...

The process of this test also works on DNA. Just need different primers and enzymes.

Nope, coronavirus is based on single stranded positive RNA.

If you have evidence to the contrary post it. Claims without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

I am as well. Been holding for a couple weeks now. They just updated their website so hopefully good news soon. I would like to get my hands on their test since it tells you if you were already exposed to the virus through antibodies. I had what I thought was the flu a month ago. Now I'm curious.

The Admiral in charge of the PHS made the point yesterday that there are 18k of these machines already in the system.

Correct. It's just a different reagent load for the ID Now system, in use for a couple of years.
