    Fire in Calaveras County

There is a fire along Parrots Ferry Rd. that started north of the bridge. It has gone to 1,000 acres in about 3 hours with no containment. There is a lot of brush and grass in that area with some oaks and Digger Pines. That thing has the potential to get really big. Unfortunately, it will pull resources away from other fires.

0 to 1,000 acres in about 3 hours?! That is bad.

      From the Caldor fire thread:

ETA, ruh roh, just spotted another one down near Sonora/Angels Camp and New Melones reservoir. Added fire history and structures to the map. Oh, my.

Picture of early start from Sonora fire cam....

Hope they don't dawdle on it. Update, air assets are all over it...

It is radar or something, so who knows (someone other than me) what it really means, but it looks alarming.

Looks like the air assets knocked it down, the last hour time-lapse shows some smoke but not aggressive. However, this could be how the Caldor fire went, it popped up, they painted it, left it and it sat and stewed and then exploded. Fire path appears to be a few old burn scars and fresh meat and a river canyon so hopefully it won't go like that.

The header from the Airola Fire in Calaveras county is clearly visible from my house. It's pumping a lot of smoke.

Aircraft are hitting it hard. Fortunately, the Columbia Air Attack Base is a very short flight to the fire.

It does look like it's calmed down a bit. Hopefully it will lay down tonight to give the ground crews a fighting chance.

I pray the fire stays in Calaveras. If it jumps the New Melones Lake, things would get dicey for Columbia.

1000 acres of grass in 3 hours is pretty normal up here. Early air resources are being sent home and the VLAT was cancelled. Sounds like they are on top of it.

It's not just grass. There is a lot of brush on those hills along Parrots Ferry. Most of the trees in that area are oaks, along with some buckeyes and pines.

I saw they had air tankers from Santa Rosa and Hollister to go along with the 2 in Columbia. I'm not sure what other planes they had there, if any.

Fortunately it has not been very hot here the last few days, so hopefully they will get some good fire lines around it tonight.

If you know where the 2013 Bridges fire was or know where Parrot's Ferry road curves away from the reservoir and translate to the opposite side, that the general location of where GOES is currently showing, in the last 10 minutes anyway, the hottest part of the fire. Modis and Viirs haven't picked it up yet. The wind is currently blowing out of the north. Here's a blowup of the current data, of course subject to change.

Oh great. The wind pattern shows the smoke blowing directly from the fire to our place about 12 miles to the SE. We don't smell any smoke yet, but it is bound to settle during the night. It is only an annoyance to me, but my wife has bad asthma.

Preston CLB is only 2-3 south of the fire. I wonder if he is getting smoked out yet.

Is it anywhere near Arnold, or burning in that direction? Got a cabin there. Thanks.

Good news, apparently their efforts late yesterday helped settle things overnight, very little heat this morning.

BTW, the mapping tool I use and post in threads has a cool measuring tool that with a couple clicks one can estimate distances between points pretty accurately. It might be off a bit in steep terrain but provides a general indication.

In the case of Arnold, it's a bit over 14 miles from the fire site.
