bolt 20 gage

I have my dads 1950 Mossberg bolt action 20 gage shotgun. it has not been fired in at least 45 years. i mostly shoot C&R military rifles. So i took the shot gun out to shoot with my C&R buddies. I was surprised that this rifle had quite a kick. I shoot mosin M-44 carbines, garands,you name it and i honestly think
that old bolt action 20 gage kicked harder. i was using 1 oz bird shot 2 3/4.
I remember as a kid my dad would shoot it at midnight on new-years . i doubt it was legal but he did it. At 10 years old i was scared of it.

My wife inherited one of those and the 12g as well. I'm going to clean them up, pull the pins and put them on the wall. I'll be honest, I'm 46, grew up in the "fly over states" and still had never seen a bolt action shot gun before then. SxS was the default upland gun. O/U was the "nice" duck gun and pump the everyman's gun. Single shot for the kids and brother-in-law and the rich guys up at the club used semi autos.

Bolt guns kick more because there is absolutely no parts movement to mitigate the recoil. Even a pump has the immediate working of the action to help a bit.

Had a Mossberg 20 ga bolt action shotgun many years ago. Remember it had a 2 round detachable box magazine and 2 or 3 screw-in chokes for it.

By the way, how many of you guys have seen 12 ga shotguns built on converted Mauser 98 actions?

Some of those old bolt guns are not safe due to some headspacing and reports of the bolts flying back into the shooters face. I would have it checked by a gunsmith before firing.
