    need 870 HELP

I recently scored an 870 Security for 300 bucks. When I was trying to take off the end cap it stopped turning after making the usual ratchet sound. I tried my best and my stepdad who has always been an 870 guy couldnt get it off either, and he was using quite a bit of force. Is there something I am missing? I always thought they just screwed off, any one ever have the ball detent thing break or slide over some how to get in the way? The cap is stuck maybe a turn or two off where it rests so the barrel has a tiny bit of play in it. It pisses me off I just bought the shotgun and this happens, any help is MUCH appreciated.

I had the darndest time with mine. I ended up getting a rubber strap wrench and using that. PM me if you need more help.

Ah, 870 Security...You mean the 18 or 18.5" model with the magazine extension? I remember that Big 5 called this one the "Security" model.

Anyway, if this is the case, I just got one myself and the magazine extension threaded portion is different from older models. Instead of being able to screw in the extension part into the cap, and then the whole extension onto the magazine tube, you now have to screw the cap in first and then screw in the extension portion. It seems to hold up fine. I don't know why they changed it, but the older dimensions were better.

You shouldn't have to brute force anything.

Oops, misread the OP as couldn't put it on, not take it off!

I know when I got my last one, the mag ext tube was screwed on at the factory by a Remington certified gorilla. I just used some penetrating oil, a cloth and wrench.

Since you mentioned it gets stuck after the ratcheting sound, I wonder if the threads are out of spec on the cap?

Couldn't you just put a piece of cloth or rubber down on it and then use a pipe wrench?

It kind of scares me wrenching on it that hard, but I dont believe there is really any other option. I am going to pick up a strap type wrench this weekend and see what happens.

i have an 870 security model from big 5 and mine makes the ratcheting sound when i remove the extension. i feel and hear a ratcheting sound for the first couple of turns then it goes away and the extension comes off. mine was really hard to get off the first time i cleaned it but its no problem now. the only other problem i had was the cheap walmart bulk winchester rounds would jam repeatedly in my 870 so i just use the federal with no problems.

Try using the rubber strap wrench as suggested- oil filter wrench. Or try using the rubber cloth things used to help open stuck jars. DO NOT use a pipe wrench!

do you have an extended magazine? If so, did you remove the mag clamp?

otherwise I often take a rag and some channel lock pliers and grip it that way.

I have sometimes had luck bouncing the stock off the ground while trying to turn it. If that doesn't work get a strap wrench or a steel wrench with some very careful padding under the jaws.

The extended mag portion is hard as hell to get off, just use some muscle maybe a rubberband. Its like a jar of old pickles.
