Skeet & Trap

Team, if I go out to shoot some trap, Skeet practice during the week, and I am the only person how do I handle pull call. Is there delay timer or is it not possible to shoot if you don't have a partner?

It depends on the range, some have staff to do this for you if you're alone. For the places wife and I shoot trap at, they either have have a 6 sec delay switch (Coyote Valley) or the trap is thrown via voice activation (Los Altos and Sunnyvale).

Generally speaking, it is no problem for trap. I don't shoot Skeet and is not familiar with their clay launching method but it might be similar.

Call the range you're going to. Most of them have voice activated launchers for trap. For skeet you usually need someone to pull for you.

Sporting clays usually has a delay you can set in the controller so you can shoot by yourself.

I have learned to use the delay. Kind of sucks but changes things up a bit. I keep the controller in my shell pouch, load, push the appropriate button and haul asz. I have been told to jump on the shots, and this really drives it home. Keeps me from running away with the gun too.

Call your range and see if they have time delays or can provide a puller for skeet.

Grant - most trap ranges (and certainly all in So. CA) have voice activated systems, so shooting by your lonesome is not an issue.

Skeet on the other hand is another matter. Depending on the range, some systems allow a fixed delay (as at Redlands Shooting Park, a 3 sec. delay) while others have variable delay that you can select up to 6 sec. (Triple B Clays).

Most sporting clay ranges also have delay functions. As shovelon mentioned, the most common approach if using the range's system is to set the delay you want/can, and work with it. For skeet it can throw off your timing and routine (esp since skeet is shot with the gun mounted), but it does force you to react to the target (a good thing in general) and not run-away before you actually see it.

For sporting clays, it is less distracting, since SC is shot from a low-gun position and you are purposefully looking for the target, then reacting (mount, insert, shoot).

One of the best investments I have ever made, especially for skeet, is to get a Clay Delay voice activated system. This allows me to practice skeet whenever I have the time, without depending on a puller. I got mine used for about 1/4th what a new system costs, but I was lucky; they generally go for half, or slightly more, than new. If you're interested, check out www.claydelay.com

Full disclosure. I just took Don Ziegler's clinic, have his book and was thinking of going down to Prado to practice. That was the first time I have shot any type of clays. All previous shotgun work has been tactical style.

^yep! At least with skeet, I've noticed people are more willing to let you join them then they are with trap.

May give that a try. Given I am likely to miss a lot more than I hit, I am a little bashful about learning well the others are playing a serious game. But might. No worse than my playing golf with a group I don't know.

At Triple B you can put a delay of 0,1,2,3,4, or 5 seconds for skeet. Put your key in the machine and add the targets like you normally would.

To set delay push the big button on the box (the same one you use to add targets) and hold, now grab the pickle and push either the high or low house button. This will toggle the delay. You'll see it on the little screen. Default is 0 (zero), but go to desired delay and release big button. You're ready to go.
