.410 for trap?

I used to shoot trap with my Remington 1100 but now my daughter wants to learn trap. She has a Rossi rifle/shotgun with an interchangeable barrel setup where we can install either a .22lr or a .410 barrel. I'm worried about the recoil and weight of the 1100 being a problem for a 12-year old just learning to shoot trap and thought about installing the .410 barrel on her rifle and letting her learn with that. Has anyone here had their kids shoot trap with a .410? Is it just going to lead to frustration and disappointment if the .410 shells just don't have enough range or shot to break a bird?

I started shooting trap with my Remington 1100 back in the late 1980's and never had problems breaking birds, when I'm actually on target . I don't have experience shooting trap with a .410 shotgun, though.

.410 for Trap is only for the VERY good already experienced shooters.

You need to be an awfully good shot to shoot trap with a .410, even from the 16 yd line.

All you will do is discourage her with a .410. I am currently looking for a shotgun for each of my daughters. CZ makes a little 20ga with 24" barrels and a 13" LOP.

Your correct, it will definitely lead to frustration and disappointment.

The 410 can still be used as a trainer for gun mount, cheek weld, pointing and shooting static targets in the range at 25yrd or less depending on the guns choke.

For Trap ....it has to be the worse gun to try and learn with.....expert, and I mean expert, Trap shooters will be doing back flips if they break 50% with a 410

Likewise a 12yr old trying to hold up the weight of an 1100 with a stock that is nowhere near fitting is just as bad and will probably lead to some early bad experiences and that is never a good thing to overcome down the road

Look for a 28ga (expensive) or a 20ga (shoot the lightest shells you can find ) with WOOD stocks.....get a informal gun fitting and tune the gun and adjust the stock accordingly for her.

Its very important that you make the first expereance fun and comfortable

Hand thrown trap standing by the point of release isn't too bad with 410. Commercial trap at the 16 yard line would be really tough. The effective range of a 410 max's out at ~30 yards and that's gonna call for some pretty fast shooting.

i'd rather see you get some reduced 12g loads for her if she can manage the weight of the 1100. 1100's are kinda heavy, but soft recoiling. 7/8oz may not cycle, but they don't really need to.

Ideally I'd see her with a gas 20g reasonably fitted, but that takes a committment ($$$). A 20g mossberg with jr stock won't be as soft shooting, but softer on your wallet.

Skip the 28. Factory ammo is expensive and few "cheap" guns come in 28.

The problem is that you will have to deal with frustration on the miss. Where she firing versus the bird. 410 is a very difficult cartridge to diagnose a miss on. Hence, its the round of the very skilled as they know where they missed and by how far.

If she can swing a 20, shoot that, a 16 would be preferred, but a 12 a 16 yards is still stop dog.

Good advice above.You do not want to discourage her with an innapropriate shotgun. Leads to frustration and her saying Oh i can't do this I don't want to.
