A semi auto decision.

I'm looking to buy either a Mossberg 930 JM pro or a Remington Versmax. I called every indoor range within 150 miles of me to see if they rent them but no one does. I live in Auburn. Do any of you know of a place I may have missed that does rent those guns? To choose the right gun I'm willing to drive a good distance.

I dont know any ranges that rent shotguns. I have been looking at the ATI tacsx2. its very affordable and generally the Turkey made shotguns are good.

Thanks for the input. If I can't try them both then I will attempt to get as many people's opinions on the two guns as possible I suppose.

None of the local ranges in Sacramento have either of those that I've seen. Your best bet is to get yourself established here, do some networking/make friends, and somebody will eventually take you out and let you shoot theirs.

Don't be shy about asking people about their shotgun if you see them using the ones you like on the range. I shoot trap with a Benelli Supersport and it tends to draw attention, when people ask me about it, I always ask if they'll like to try a round of trap with it.

Most semi-autos aren't some $60,000 piece of family heirloom anyway, and I think most people are more than willing to let you try it.

My brother bought a JM Pro 24 and it has been pretty reliable for him with over 1000 rounds of mixed slugs, buckshot, and a bunch of WW value pack field loads. It did come with a mangled mag spring from the factory but they sent out two replacements for free. Recoil is soft until you shoot hi-base slugs/buckshot but adding a Limbsaver Airtech #10809 recoil pad tames even those. Aftermarket support is pretty good for accessories/goodies. I liked his so much I just went and bought the same gun on Big 5's 15% off sale earlier this month for $680 OTD.

Shot a bit at Sac Valley. No rentals. Did see one guy shoot a Rem Versamax zombie 3gun model. I tried a couple shots with it at Skeet st-5. Even with 22" barrel it blew those clays apart. Nice shooting gun...

I have a Versamax Tac in jail.

JM Pro was one of the ones I was considering.

I can't articulate much reason for choosing the Versamax other than:
I like where the safety is on the Remington.
Versamax has a $100 rebate through early 2015.

I figure guns are like printers. The unit is cheap it's the consumables that cost you. So, in the service life of a weapon initial costs are no big deal. Minor differences in aesthetics, features, purported quality between guns of a certain class usually only boil down to a few boxes of ammo in the grand scheme.

JM 930 here. No issues at when it's clean, but I've had FTF problems when it's dirty. The gas tube/ring needs to be cleaned every 500 rounds or so (in my experience) for total reliability in a match.

I do have 3 friends with the same model, and they don't keep them up - they have issues.

For half price (ish) of the VM, I'll take it, and spend the time cleaning properly. Eventually, I may go Benelli. but didn;t dsee a reason to get 75% there and not make the jump...

Jerry Miculek has a great 930 cleaning his on his youtube channel. Follow the instructions, and you'll be fine.
