    appi, calling appi please....870 issues!

I'm hopeful that appi is around and is up for a few 870 questions.

    I'm looking at a used 870 in 410.

It will load more than one 3" shell into the magazine, but will not load more than one 2.5"....huh? It feels like it is hanging up on something. Looking at the magazine it appears that perhaps the magazine, receiver and trigger assembly are for a 28 gauge (it sez 28 on the trigger assembly) and the magazine tube looks to be sleeved down to reduce the inside diameter for a 410. Although sleeved, it still seems a bit large as the spring will easily bend/bind within it. There is a small plastic spring follower, just larger than a 410 hull, that maybe should have a wider flange on it to prevent the spring from bending? (There is a white, nylon looking button on the magazine cap nut too.) The spring follower also seems too small for the magazine tube as I can see that it is sideways at times. This may also be coupled with a burr at the magazine/shell entry point as the empty loaded 'try shells' are coming out after cycling with small gouges along the brass rim.

Another thing that I noted is there is a small silver colored rectangular spring just in front of the hammer. It springs up with the hammer, but doesn't do anything, I cannot figure out what it does. Looking at a Kuhnhausen book, it seems like it should be a gate spring, but I cannot tell where it's actual mounting is in the book. Since this is a used gun, I'm assuming that someone has taken it apart for cleaning and did not put everything back in it's position upon reassembly.

The receiver is so narrow, that I cannot get my fingers into the releases to pull the bolt out. Is there a special tool to do so?

Lastly, it shows that it's a 870 LW, I'm assuming that this may be a 20 light frame that a 20, 28 and 410 share with different size openings for the different size hulls. Is this a fact? If that is correct, then will a 28 gauge barrel work on the same receiver? The 410 barrel is reduced down just past the breech and appears to be about the size of a 28 gauge before that reduction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated appi.

    Thank you!

Sound like more issues then I have tissues. As for the feed, a new magazine spring and follower do wonders for that issue. If there is some kind of burr on the follower shoulder stop that should be repaired by a gun smith. The spring you are talking about is the action bar lock spring and no way should it be over in front of the hammer. It is either bent or broker and it is FUBAR'd and needs replaced.

The 20ga .410 and 28 ga receivers and many of the parts are the same. The magazine tube for the .410 and 28 are the same so they use the same mag cap, spring retainer and I assume can therefor use the same magazine spring but they show a different one for the .410 on the parts list. This means nothing as the same mag spring can be used on the 12, 26 and 20 and is listed that way on the parts list, yet they sell different ones for the 20ga

I can't tell much with out seeing it so I would simply say it sound like a lot of issues and a good gun to pass on. However, if you get it for a steal and have a good gun smith in your area then it good be a deal worth taking.

Thank you so much for the insight aippi (Sorry for the misspell of your name initially). And feeder, thank you for the link to the schematic. (It's # 2 and is in fact the action bar lock spring)

I think that I will pass on this one, even though I've been searching for a year to find a decent one in SoCal, this one had my hopes as the exterior is in fantastic shape. DANG IT!
