Hello all,
I purchased a used hawk 982. It came with a remington wingmaster bolt. I fired some birdshot, 2.75" buck, 3" buck, 3" slugs with no problems. However, it concerns me that the locking lug slot on the barrel seems to be slightly worn down (this was present upon initial inspection, before i fired any ammo). Same with the Locking lug on the bolt assembly. These surfaces are supposed to have a 90 degree angle but it seems like the corners have been rounded slightly.
Question 1: Is this normal wear? or should i be concerned. I worry that perhaps the locking surface may one day become so rounded/worn that the locking lug slips and the whole bolt assembly shoots out the back of the receiver and into my face.
Question 2: Is it safe to use the wingmaster bolt? It seems to be a pretty common upgrade for 982 owners. However, if the barrel steel and the locking lug steel have different hardness levels, can one wear the other one out?
Any help/comparisons to other 982/870 wear patterns would be much appreciated.
