    My Maverick 88

A friend gave this to me so I figured I'd change it up a bit. It was completely stock with the black polymer stock/forend before. Since my cost was $0 I figured spending a few bucks couldn't hurt. Normally I wouldn't put much $ into a Maverick since that defeats the purpose of a budget shotgun.

    Added:
GG&G front sling and flashlight mount
    GG&G rear receiver sling mount
    Mossberg OEM blued heat shield
Solarforce L2 flashlight body with Malkoff M61L drop in and upgraded clicky and lens

    Swapped in:
Mossberg 500 wood stock/forend from Numrich (refinished it)
Mossber 500 action tube assembly to make the forend work

Had to use a Hogue grind to fit recoil pad because I cut the stock a 13" LOP. Have to hand grind the last 1/16th of an inch still.

Feels much "heavier" with the M500 forend. Smoother and tighter operation.

Hope to take it out soon. The added weight will hopefully help felt recoil. Mostly did I because I love the look of shotguns with wood and 5 round mag tubes.

Very nice wood furniture, she's a beauty! Those plastic black furniture that mavericks come with are almost as ugly as sin.

It's a rat tail Mossberg 500 forend. Numrich part number 561020A.

You have to use the Mossberg 500 7 5/8" action slide tube to make it work though.

You can also use a 6" 3/4 but you have to use that adapter nut Hogue makes. It ends up being a little cheaper than a 7" 5/8 tube and factory nut.

I already have the 6 3/4" and adapter. Is there a way to get a matching stock with the forend? Would be nice to have one that looks the same.

There are always quite a few matching sets on ebay.

Mine didn't match and thats why I strippes and refinished it. The buttstock has yet to get steel wool and wax like the forend. Im going to do that in the next few days after I make the finishing adjustments to the recoil pad.

Looks great, kinda reminds me of the early police shotguns. I was looking to do something just like that. What else did you have to get to make the forend fit?

That's exactly why I like the wood + 5 shot mag tube combo.. also reminds me of old police shotguns.

To get the forend installed all you need is a Mossberg 500 action tube, nut, and forend. (The action tube can be the long or short as mentioned above, but you'll need the Hogue adapter nut to use the short one in MOST cases. There are a few wood forends that use the ahort tube. Much more rare though.)

The Maverick forend and assembly is all one piece... action bars attached permanently to the forend with pins. There is not a steel tube in the forend. The polymer forend slides directly on the mag tube.

The wood forend slides onto the Mossberg 500 action tube asaembly and the nut holds it in place. The steel action tube slides against the mag tube. Action bars are pinned in a different manner to the tube and there is a sprung piece of steel that keeps them from rattling as much. The assembly is heavier and doesn't rattle as much (Mossberg 500s are a little rattly on their own). The wood helps soak up some rattle noise so you get a more pure mechanical racking sound. Lol. I sound like a nut job.

Now my 88 looks ugly! I actually bought an 88 just to use the 24" rifled slug barrel I picked up in a trade, it serves that purpose well.

                              Thanks for the compliments!

Again, I might not have done this if the shotgun hadn't been free mostly because the cost of what I added is more than the price of a new Maverick 88. I don't get rid of guns given to me as gifts so since this was free and has sentimental value I figured what the heck.

That being said, here's the parts list/prices:

$50.00 Mossberg 500 Action Tube Assembly w/ Nut from Ebay
$55.00 Mossberg 500 Rat Tail Forend & Military Stock from Numrich
$00.00 Stain, Tru Oil, and Refinishing supplies on Hand
$31.00 Mossberg Blued Heat Shield from Midway
$26.00 Hogue EZG Grind to Fit Reciol Pad from Amazon (only need if you can't retain the stock one from Numrich. I cut the stock to reduce the LOP and the stock recoil pad has a metal plate in it that doesn't allow resizing without a mess)

So, $162 just for the basics. The light mount and sling setup adds more:

$27.00 GG&G Rear Sling Mount from Midway
$30.00 GG&G Front Sling and Flashlight Mount from Midway
                              $17.00 GG&G 1" Flashlight Ring from Midway

                              So, another $74 right there.

I had the flashlight and sling laying around so didn't list those. The flashlight is about $80 though and the VCAS sling was something I picked up on clearance from BFG for $25.

In a way, it's kind of ridiculous that in the current state (w/ sling and flashlight - although the sling isn't on in the picture) the "free" shotgun has a cost of $341. HA HA! That's why I wouldn't do this to a Maverick if I paid for it. Cost more than the gun.

The first $162 is also a lot just to add wood furniture, but might still be worth it to me. I sold the polymer stock and forend assembly on Ebay for $40 net of fees so really I'm at $122. Still a lot for a gun worth less than $200, but I like the look.
