Maybe the terms date me somewhat because I almost never see low gun shooters at the range nowadays. For the uninformed, high gun means calling pull with the shotgun mounted to the shoulder and low gun means calling the bird with the shotgun not mounted. In the European events when I was stationed in Germany, trap and skeet was all low gun with the stock at waist level. I only use low gun to sharpen up for dove season because one gives up too much of an advantage in competition when everyone is shooting high gun.

Trap/Skeet High Gun or Low Gun?

I shoot only low gun, but I'm shooting for practice rather than for score. -
I shoot from the hip gangsta style low gun.
Seriously though, it depends on what you are to do. The range where I shoot is frequented by hunters so you will people shooting low gun in practice for hunting. Those competing for score will shoot high gun, why give yourself a penalty?Comment

I shoot everything low gun. My interest is in staying sharp for hunting.
Is it a handicap? A bit. I still shoot in the 20's. In my handicap league, I'm shooting against myself anyways. I'm the only one out of about 40 shooting low gun.
"International" does specify low gun as well as tougher targets.Palestine is a fake country

Some of the guys I shoot with in Fresno prefer low gun.
For me:
Skeet, trap, high gun
5 stand and sporting clays, low gun
Just a matter of preference. If I ever stop laughing, I'm dead.

I was expecting a troll to say he shoots low gun better than he shoots high gun. Its possible, but not likely. Practice improves a smooth and accurate mount from low gun to mebbe even 99%; but, one should have a perfect mount in high gun every time. There is no excuse not to. So in a 100 bird shoot, guess who probably wins?Comment

Well....when I learned the game I shot high gun. One of the guys on my team shot low gun. Once I had command of the game I switched to low gun. My scores didn't suffer, but then I was only shooting 20'ish average anyways. If I started shooting high gun now, I suspect my scores would suffer...for at least awhile.I was expecting a troll to say he shoots low gun better than he shoots high gun. If I was shooting for money against high gun shooters, I would probably take the time to adapt to high gun. I doubt I'd enjoy it as much though.Palestine is a fake country

I personally shoot skeet LOW gun, and trap high gun
Not sure if I shoot skeet better high or low, but I FEEL like I do better in skeet with low gunI was expecting a troll to say he shoots low gun better than he shoots high gun. When sporting clays first came out this way, low gun was the rule. Now I guess there's two different ruling bodies (international vs ???) One allows high gun, the other doesn't.
The shoot for score crowd took over the improve my wingshot crowd I guess. Needed different rules. Of course 80 used to be a very good score and now it's not competitive. There's some fabulous shotgunning, just not as realistic. I still see sporting clays as simulated hunting, so I shoot it that way as close as possible. I still call pull though
. We used to do a "quail walk" where the puller would pull at random as you walked about. Anyone still do that?

I shoot skeet better low gun
I'm not a troll though, I just shot skeet and 5 stand today and I shoot both low. IMO it makes you a better all around shooter. Part of the reason I like to shoot low is that I can turn my head and pick up the bird earlier, the mount is automatic and by the time I mount it and pull the trigger I am not at any disadvantage. The most challenging station to shoot low is 8, but I'm good at that now.
I don't compete, but if I did, I would still shoot low because I trained myself to be good at it and that's how my timing is set.

Try low 8 with a full choke and low gun. I seldom hit that one, but I don't really expect to.The most challenging station to shoot low is 8, but I'm good at that now.Comment
