    Breaking in my New 590A1

I made it out to Angeles Shooting Range and had a great afternoon breaking in my new Mossberg 590A1. Recoils was very managable using both full powered Fiocchi and Winchester OO buckshot, the magazine easily took 5 of either shell. The Fiocchi shells were softer shooting and patterned a bit higher at 15 yards than the Winchester shells.

Fiocchi Patterns at 15 yards (left 1 shell, right 5 shells)

Winchester Patterns at 15 yards (left 1 shell, right 5 shells)

    Mossberg 590A1

I got out the Angeles Range again today with a few boxes of Winchester and Remington 1 oz. rifled slugs. The slugs at 1600fps have substantially more kick than the OO buckshot loads at 1300fps, but at 15 to 20 yards grouped withing the same general area. I moved the target out to 35 paces (yards ?) I was still able to keep slugs in the 10 ring of a standard silhouette using the black bead front site. When I got home today I ordered a .125" 4-40 brass bead and pin vise from Midway that should improve the sight picture.

    Cheers,

If you want to get a tighter group, I'd suggest Federal Flight Control. Enjoy your new shotgun! I've had mine since 2011 and never ever had a hiccup with mine.
Bounce a ball in Football that's a fumble. Baseball, no bouncing at all. Bounce a ball in Hockey, well that's a mandatory drug test right there...

Just so you know, 1100fps isn't full powered buckshot loads.

I stand corrected, I checked the boxes and it is 1300 fps on the buckshot.

I agree. Specifically, Federal Flight Control LE132 (also sold as PD132) 00 buck.

                    +1. That stuff is awesome.
                    Love my 590A1.

                    Thanks for the range reports.

                      Nice shotgun.

Are you sure the distance to target is 15 yards? The spread of the buckshots seems a little too wide for 15 yards.

Here's what the pattern of a 3-inch magnum Winchester SuperX 00 buckshot (15 pellets) looks like at 15 yards when shot out from my Benelli. Everything is within a 3x4.5-inch area. I did have a Modified choke on it though, but the difference in pattern is a little too much, yours looked more like something at 50 yards.

                        Wow, those patterns are huge!

I own a Mossy 590 for HD. I have patterened it with 3 types of 00 Buck. All Low Recoil (Tactical), all shot at 10 yds, Remington, Fiocchi & Federal.

                        Remington RL12BK00 - 3.5 inch pattern
                        Fiocchi 12LE00BK - 5.5 inch pattern
                        Federal LE133 00 - 1.2 inch pattern (Flite Control)
I also took some Estate 7.5 Birdshot with me. The pattern was bigger than the target.

Congrats on a great new Shotgun!

My 590A1 has the 18.5 inch cylinder bore, the goups were taken at 15 paces so it may be a bit further.

                          Cheers,
