    Police trade in 870?

Does anyone know where there might be a Remington 870 Police trade in for sale? I've already called all of my LGS here in Redding, and no luck.

River City Gun Exchange usually has them. I believe they start around 350ish???

You can buy a new express for less then 400 nowadays.

As far as online sources, most people seem to point to Summit Gun Broker.

I have both and I'll take the trade in gun all day long over a new MFG Express. I actually bought two Rem. 870 Wingmasters that were both Sacramento PD trrade ins from my LGS, which is unfortunately not open to the public. They are both excellent shooters and like most police guns are carried a lot and shot very little. I did refinish the furniture and replace the mag spring and follower on both. Otherwise bone stock and very reliable (I have shot both of them). The third shotgun pictured is an Ithaca M37 riot gun that I got from my own department when they phased them out (Yes, I had to pay for it!)

I bought one from jksupplyco 209-274-2383 back in 2012... They seem to be sold in lots from the PD. I know the police still have them but nobody knows when and if they will release them for sale.

I agree with that linked post from the armorer.. I would tread lightly looking for a deal unless you know yourself what you're doing and looking at, or have a dealer cherry pick in your favor and not get the leftovers.. you can get a whole dept's bag 'o crap in one fell swoop if you or your dealer don't know what they're doing..

Sportsman Outdoor Superstore has had a lot of police turn-ins including ammo.. just have to be looking or give them a call and see what they can do for you if not listed online.. they've also had in the past turn-in glocks, berettas, ar's, etc.. Used Gun Collection

$246.75 with free shipping, but oos

I think you mean JD McGuire of AIPPI Tactical. Not only was he an armorer for a PD, but runs a business providing shotguns for numerous law enforcement agencies.

AS for myself, I went with the 870 Express from a Big 5 with the short barrel and LE forend. I got it when Remington had a rebate, which I expect they will soon run for the holidays. It did have the problem with a rough chamber, that was cured following the steel wool on wooden dowel treatment recommended at JD's website. One of these days I will likely send it in to JD to be parkerized.

Other than that it has been a good shooter. While I think a handgun may be the better HD weapon, the combination of one with a shotgun is a real winner.

Just buy a used wingmaster that isn't a police trade in. 10x better than new production guns.

slightly OT but wanted to respond to this post. Several times over the years folks at work have asked me for a handgun recommendation for home defense. i then ask them if they have any handgun experience, if they say no i always recommend an 18" barreled pump shotgun. I can teach someone to shoot and operate a pump shotgun pretty easy, a hand gun tales a lot more time and money to become proficient. A shotgun has plenty of firepower for the job, and you can't stuff it in yer pants and take it outside, an easy way to go to prison. Not trying to start an arguement just wanted to show another side of the handgun/shotgun issue. Cost is also a big factor,,,,a good handgun will run you $500 easy, you can find a good pumpgun new for $300 if you look for sales/factory rebates.pretty hard to beat the Mossberg combo gun, you get a bird barrel and a HD barrel......Mike

You're right about that, my memory isn't what it used to be. It is AIPPI who made the comment in post #17 in the thread that was linked here. Very interesting comment. I have to look at several shotguns. I like the way the tactical guns look with short barrels, but want to be able to change out the barrel from tactical to field. I already have a HD shotgun, which is a Benelli M2 tactical, and I have lots of handguns, so that is not really the purpose of wanting the 870 or M590a1. I just like the way they look, but want to be able to put a longer barrel on it and be able to shoot clay targets. I have found a Benelli Super Nova that I like also. I am reading up on that model to see what people think of it.
