    mossberg 590 options

    Hi all,

So I finally took out my 590a1 spx. Went out to the desert and tried bird, buck and slug. Man, that was FUN. The ghost rings were great, no ftf/fte's or anything. Accurate and the kick was acceptable (had a hogue short LOP but had the limbsaver which really helped).

So now I'm thinking of getting a second 590. Might seems silly, but:
    1. Sticking with Mossberg due to me being lefty and I dont like cross bolt safeties.
    2. I would like a backup that I can interchange parts with, just in case.

However, I'd like a lighter version of the spx, but would like to stick with the 20" length. Mariner, maybe? Plus, has anyone played with the Magpul version? Looks interesting. Thanks!

I haven't played with the Magpul version, but I have played with one with all the Magpul furniture. I like the stock very much, the fact you can adjust the LOP is great and the ergonomics are comfortable. I do like the fore-end, I just wish it was textured a bit more aggressively. The fact there's essentially handstops fore and aft are great. Also the ability to add rail sections where needed is great when it comes to mounting a light. Using a solution that clamps onto the barrel/mag tube is nice, but to be honest it's not the easiest to actuate. Not to mention short of a switch using a momentary on/off is nearly impossible.

Thanks for the info on the Magpul pieces. Not sure if there's a difference between an official Mossberg Magpul vs. swapping parts out from a stock one, but I do need a shorter stock for my stubby little arms. Re: a light, I get you on position of the light. Wouldn't have thought about that. I'll start keeping an eye out for a Magpul version vs. buying a used mossberg and swapping parts out.

The Mossberg Magpul line is just accessories. I know a lot of guys with long arms that prefer a shorter LOP. If you want something lighter you'd have to go with a non A1 version. Lighter receiver and also a lighter barrel. Although the heavy walled barrel isn't necessarily a bad thing as it helps with muzzle jump inbetween shots. Sucks if you have to hump it long distances though.

My 590A1 (9-shots, Ghost Ring) is quite simple...

          - Hogue 12" LOP butt stock (came with recoil pad.)
          - GG&G forend (built-in small picatinny rail.)
          - Mission First Tactical TORCH backup light (weight just 22 grams.)

For a lightweight setup, I am happy about it.
