    Skeet rules

When ever I'm at the range, and join a random party, it always seems people have different rules. Is there a "set" guidelines or anything?

Some people said you have to hit the bird before it crosses the the middle, some say that's non sense etc...

So any set rules or ??

    Thanks!

On station 8 (the last station), you must shoot the bird before it crosses the center line. The other shooters are behind you, so this is (at least theoretically) a safety rule.

    Hope that helps.

      That makes perfect sense!

So all other 7 stations, can shoot the bird as late as you wish? (past the line)?

All other stations it is acceptable to shoot a clay anywhere across the skeet field. You cannot however shoot a clay that has passed either house, drawing a straight line across the front of either house that is.

Shooting the clay at or close to center stake is more desirable as you get used to the intricacies of skeet, but not necessary.

Just Google 'Skeet Rules' there is a complete set out there. Including field layout, ammo, missed targets, malfunctions and scoring.

As long as you hit the target before it reaches the opposite house. It's out of bounds if it does. To make your doubles and shootoff's better, it's in your best interest to get used to hittinn the outgoing targets and station 4 before the center stake.

The other rule is in which order you shoot doubles. Always the going away bird first.

That would be VERY hard on the doubles to hit the second bird before the middle.

Everyone else nailed it though, only station 8.

We do 8 a bit different though in the club. On our weekly shoots, we shoot both sides of 8 and everyone stands on the path from 4 to 8. It's just faster then everyone shooting high-house 8, then switching to low-house 8.

Shooting the first bird in a double, too fast, can throw the timing off a bit as well. The idea is to shoot the first bird at a point where you can immediately transition to the second and hit it in a comfortable spot while the odds of hitting it are still high. It is harder to hit the bird when it gets near the end of the shooting area, for me. When you time it all right, there is a nice smooth, fluid, motion when moving the shotgun and the birds will be taken in the center half of the field.

There are rules to the game, and then there are guidelines to help you shoot it better. The Calguns skeet classes were well worth my while, and the cost was great.

Just don't kill them both with one shot

I have done it two or three times. It is easier than I thought it would be, but if I remember right, it doesn't count if they are shot with only one round of ammo.

If you get both birds with one shot (Scotch double), the first bird of the pair is "established". You have to re-shoot the pair, but don't have to hit the first bird to count as a hit, but you do have to throw lead it's way before shooting at the 2nd (incoming) bird.
