    Debrief: SoCal Skeet Clinic 19-OCT-2014

We had a great clinic at beautiful Triple B Clays in El Monte. The majority of attendees are clinic veterans, but we were happy to have a couple of new attendees. Coach Don fitted them with guns and went over the basics and safety protocol with all of us. Then we got the new shooters hitting clays before we all did more advanced instruction. Working both new shooters with us veterans Coach Don ran us through the wringer. Even he was worked at the end of the day, but had us all shoot a proper round of skeet to finish up. In between rounds we all had the opportunity to shoot up Chuck's 25 straight hat and gave it proper ventilation.

Cones are put out in the field to use for lead meters. It works.

So I learned a couple of things today. The most important of which is to "IT'S A CALM THING", yet "HURRY UP THE SHOT!!!!!
Afterwards four of us shot a round together. Soooo much fun.

It was, indeed, a beautiful a beautiful day for a clinic. The first timers did very well, it made coach very happy to see...They did better than I did my first time out, good job guys!!!
The vertrans were given a change of pace, different foot positions and break points...More to think about...Without thinking about it...Go figure...

It was a very good clinic, everyone learned something of value. Everyone was breaking clays...I had a very good time!!!

The quality of these clinics is world class, no kidding, you won't find better...AT ANY COST...These guys are that good!!!

PS: I would like to thank everyone for "ventalating" my hat. I couldn't have hit a 25 without these clinics...Thanks Don and Richard...

2nd time at this clinic! This clinic is definitely worth while going to and for at no cost at all! After my 2nd time at Triple B's and this clinic I am getting more confident at skeet shooting although still needing more work. I will definitely be attending more of these clinics in hoping to one day shoot a perfect 25!

On another note, the other veteran's in the clinic were very helpful giving tips! One of the other shooters just so happened to have a shotgun I been looking into getting and he let me shoot it and feel it out for a round of skeet. Thanks!

Here are some photos and videos(coming soon) of the clinic.

Ok quick question, what is with the blue painters tape? Is it holding a pad adjustment to the comb?

          Thanks for the report.

Usually if there's tape on a stock it's for holding a comb pad in place. Painters tape holds fairly well and won't usually leave residue if it's good quality tape. So yeah you're probably right.

Congrats on the 25's! I usually shoot ATA trap on the weekends so I'm not much of a skeet guy but I've been contemplating enrolling in one of these clinics. What's the cost? $100-something? Perhaps a bit more?

The cost is $30, plus targets and shells. It's the best deal going, instruction like this from other people could cost several hundreds of dollars

Yes, the majority of shooters according to Don and Richard need their cheek lifted off the comb so the bottom of the pupil is not covered by the barrel. It also helps to tuck the butt into the shoulder pocket and allows you to rest your cheekbone on the stock without crooking your neck. In my case I also needed the pad offset to the right to help the stock tuck into my shoulder pocket. I still have a pad taped to my stock but have it covered with an elastic sleeve.

There are so many little things that add up. I learn something every time I go.

This was my second clinic and I gotta say, it was just as good as the first! I learned a lot more but still have a bunch more to learn. I can't wait for new clinic dates to be posted!

Yep, that's the way it is...
My biggest issue, as far as I see it, is the mental part of it, and I think that is what Don was pushing on us with the visualization. If I can go fast, with no time to think, I shoot better. There's a lot that goes on between the ears that will screw things up

I've been to several, and every time there is something new. Richard indicated to me they may cut back on them. People complain when they don't post dates, don't sign up when they do. When they post dates, sign up....Keep these clinics going, they are the best value in shooting going...

                        While a 25 is nice, it's not everything, consistency is more important. I'd rather shoot 23 ~ 24 every round, than a 25 then an 18 and then a 19...like I did...

It's been some time since I could attend a clinic, but again it was worth it.

Don and Richard don't care if you hit the bird. They care if every step was taken to achieve the proper setup. The proper setup makes hitting the bird more likely with the least effort.

Three things Don was pushing my on was modifying my foot position more to the right(he eluded as to why but I am struggling with the logic of it, however he and Richard are always right). Then picking up the target faster and breaking it earlier so that I trust my instincts and forgo thinking(as I tend to ride the bird and calculate my lead). And pulling the hips which I acknowledge I am bad at. I am good at dropping the knee on high house, but lame out on pulling the hip on low house. I tend to use my shoulders to force the gun to the target.

All of these things were impossible for me to incorporate early on at the clinics. Now that I have the basics down and improving, he can see that I can handle the next steps. Why the next steps? To tweak to perfect technique, so the conscious brain has less thinking to handle, and subconscious can reason out the instinctual part. Step up the the pad the same way every time with a plan and it becomes instinct eventually he says. I get that, shut the conscious brain down and the subconscious which is broader takes over.

This is just a little taste of how I view the clinics.
