    Need advice on this

    Mossberg 500 JIC II Shotgun

The price is 220, and I like it, still I don't know much about shotguns, done a bit of clay shooting, have a standard 12 gauge, never shot this type, is this one to be good for the range or only for home defense, it is a used one, but checked and in decent shape, what's your opinion?

I am not familiar with that specific gun.

With that said, go to a range and rent a Mossberg and an 870. See which you like shooting better. Buy accordingly.

At the very least, go to a shop and handle both. See which one feels better, which safety position you like better, etc.

Don't get caught up in the low price. It's only a good deal if it's truly the gun you want. Buy quality. Save your pennies. Buy once, cry once. It's worth waiting to get what you really want if this is not it.

Edit: Sorry, Mossberg makes a good product. I wasn't saying they don't. Only that it's not a deal if it's not the gun you really want.

The Just in Case model was a response to Katrina. It comes with a water proof tube to store it in with room for ammo and other survival supplies. It is a Mossberg 500 but not necessarily the model you want if your just looking for an HD gun. Any of the other Mossberg defense models would suit your use and there are other brands also.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

the things I like about the Mossberg over others are...
the safety right on the top/rear of the receiver, where your thumb rest easy on/off activation and easy to see whether its on safe or not because your eyeball is right there.

the Remington does have a steel receiver and the Mossberg is aluminum but I've never had (or heard about.) a problem with the aluminum and the lighter weight is a small benefit if you have to carry it at any long distance.

I just always felt the Mossberg is plenty tough and reliable,
with the exception being if you are going to do police work or maybe competition shooting where you are going to be brutally abusing the receiver.

in fact I like the position of all the controls on a Mossberg.
some shotguns they've got the slide/pump release & the safety and hard to reach spots for me anyways.
I just took a look at the google images for their JIC model and I like the water proof tube, even if it's a bit of a gimmick. I wish all firearm cardboard boxes were replaced by something more permanent like that.

the thing I didn't like is its only equipped with a pistol grip.
I have had two of the Mossberg combos, with the 2 length barrels + pistol grip and the regular stock, and I can tell you that shooting continually with THAT pistol grip not only hurts (after a day of shooting) the web of your hand a bit, your long range accuracy goes out the window.
good at close range but if you want to hit a moving target or something with any distance you're going to have to practice a lot.

if you get that shotgun think about getting a standard style traditional wood or fiberglass stock I'm sure they're cheap and available.

my last thought is the price is right, especially if you fill the tube with other shtf items (+ammo) and have it ready to go next year emergency food supply bag.

        = my 2 cents.

Exactly, it is a pistol grip only gun, I have never shot that type, and if I buy it I don't want to deal with adding stock to it, it looks cool that way but I wonder if you can shoot clay or targets with it. Sometime ago I got an ak pistol, and it is a fun gun but accuracy on the range...no way, unless you shoot 10 yards
I'd love to try it, but they dont rent those at oak tree

Forget about shooting clays with a pistol grip. You can smoke a stationary clay at 6-7 feet, but otherwise it's pointless. As for changing out the stock, that is stupid simple and quick, so don't let that hold you back. I had a pistol grip top folding stock that I would love if it weren't for the long length of pull.
            I fly everywhere backwards.
