    Wax buckshot slugs/birdshot/buckshot hybrid loads?

So i just got a box of cheap buckshot and two experimental loads came to my mind. I was wondering if one could use buckshot instead of birdshot to make wax slugs. Would the slug pack even more of a punch?

What about pouring #8 birdshot to fill in the gaps of a buckshot shell. Would this be an even better defensive load?

Have any of you ever tried loads like this and do yall think its a viable idea?

Modifying a shotshell is a bad idea.

Guys do it all the time, record it, post it on youtube and thereby make it great/safe fun for everyone.

The truth is, it is not safe at all. Shotguns have much lower safety margins than other types of firearms.

When you start reloading for shotgun, the first thing you are taught is to follow the written recipe exactly, right down to the brand and model of primer, wad, payload weight, etc. The reason for this is the wrong substitution can lead to an over pressure situation that can break a gun or worse.

Very experienced shotshell loaders learn over time which substitutions are safe and which will cause problems. Anyone without many years of shotshell loading experience should never deviate from the manufacturer recipe or tamper with a loaded commercial shell.

Don't mess with 00. It's fine the way it is. Messing around with modifying the round could cause a host of problems. If it was a good idea, the police would be doing it. They're not.

That sounds pretty much like one of the worst ideas I've ever heard for a modified shotgun shell, since you would be drastically increasing the weight of the load and doing absolutely nothing else to the shell or the shotgun to make up for it.

Well. Curiousity killed the cat and it also killed my left shoulder. Biggest reason why no one does wax slug buck or bird/buck hybrids is the recoil. The recoil of the wax buck i made felt like a 3 inch slug load. While the recoil of the bird/buck hybrid felt like a ten gauge and it patterned erratically. I learned something today.

So you asked if this was a good idea, every single poster advised against it, but you tried it anyway?

You're lucky it didn't blow up in your face.

It didn't blow up the end of the barrel like an obstruction, it blew up the receiver next to his face. That's what can happen when you start fiddling with loads and causing drastic changes in pressure.
