Recently got an OU with choke tubes. Which should I use for Trap & Skeet. In which barrel and which barrel should I fire first?

Pattern your gun using different chokes with different loads. That will give you the best combination to optimize your pattern.
I shoot full from 16 yard line and handicap. Started with a mod but after lots of practice and a couple of lessons, the full stays put (except for doubles...then it is improved modified on first and full on the 2nd).
I also shoot bottom barrel first as the recoil tends to go straight back and is absorbed by your shoulder. May be personal but that is how I like to shoot.Comment

I use improved-modified in my BT-99 for ATA trap singles and handicap. I haven't started shooting doubles yet but when I do I'll go with improved-modified and full like Newshooter said. Also understand that not all guns and chokes are created equal even if they are the same brands and models. On top of that, one companies 'full' choke may be another companies 'light full'. Supposedly certain brands like Comp-N-Choke and Pure Gold choke tubes pattern tighter than advertised and Browning choke tubes throw a looser pattern. My improved-modified tube is an Angleport that came with the gun and was custom ordered to match the diameter of the bore so that it'll supposedly transition the shot to choke smoother and it patterns tighter than a lot of full chokes do.
Traditionally people shoot the bottom barrel first but it doesn't really matter. The theory is that since the bottom barrel is more inline with your shoulder it should kick less, but let someone shoot your gun a few times without telling them which barrel is set to fire first and I bet they couldn't tell the difference.Last edited by anti; 10-13-2014, 11:51 PM.Truckers make the world go 'round!

I like a modified on 16 yard trap (1+ oz). Maybe tighten it up if you tend to ride the birds a bit.
I like cyl on skeet.
That said, pattern your shotgun. You don't have to go crazy, even a grease board will gain you a lot of info. Often choke "X" doesn't pattern as dsignated.
The typical is bottom barrel first. Before selective triggers, or the front trigger with double triggers = bottom barrel first. I think it's as much tradition as physics. IME if you single with the top barrel, you are apt to not open the gun all the way when replacing the round. In this case the triggers don't get set. They set as the gun approaches max opening.Palestine is a fake country
