my cousin who was a Vietnam veteran recommended this type of single barrel break open type shotgun (I actually forget whether he said harrington richards or N.E.F./ New England firearms, but their clones of each other anyway.) for deer hunting in a northeastern state, were only shotguns are allowed for deer hunting.

he said for the little money and the relative short-range of a shotgun accuracy they are a bargain. (and I also think that he believed if you only had one shot you would wait for the most correct moment.)

this man knew firearms and his Vietnam story were wild...he became a dog handler because it kept him in the states a little bit longer but he didn't think it through....

the military always sends a dog handler the places they won't send a soldier.
and they send soldiers to hell...so you can imagine. (His dog saved lives and took a lives.)

Trust me I know first hand what a dog in combat is capable of. They are the ghost of war at times.

That 20" is a beaut! I may have to find one and do the same thing, maybe even take it down to 18" if the OAL is still legal.

I chopped that one at 20" and reinstalled the brass bead. At first, I regretted the alteration of such a long barrel, but I seem to have gotten over it, mostly. It is a 1940, according to the serial number. Has a nice lil' "shove" to it.

I have a 18" barrel length and it is legal. If you plan on its intended use as defensive then at 18" it is very maneuverable. My brother absolutely hates single shots, but after handling mine agreed it is functional.

Has anyone bought and installed ATI's collapsible stock? If so how much shorter did it make the shotgun OAL?

In my *humble* opinion, 20" is better balanced on these H&R's both visually and mechanically (have a look at that giant buttstock)... and I like my y'arms as short as possible. lol. I've 18.5" barrels on my other pumps (with their original barrels close by).
